Solar PV and PEM Electrolyzer Based Green Hydrogen Production Cost for a Selected Location in Bangladesh

Green hydrogen has no carbon footprint as produced from renewable energy sources. The barrier is the high production cost of hydrogen for all through usage of it. The use of solar pv electricity for PEM based electrolysis may lower the production costs. Estimation of hydrogen production cost is performed using the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) method. The PV electricity cost was calculated using the HOMER Energy Software. Life time of the project is 25 years with 7.48% discount rate. The electricity cost is about BDT 39.91/kWh from Solar PV. The system consumes 6011 kWh of electricity and produces 42.44 kg of hydrogen per year. The LCC result shows that the hydrogen production cost is about BDT 230.90/g. Bangladesh might consider giving emphasis for green hydrogen production and help establishing a green hydrogen economy.

This study aims to present a quantitative cost analysis of hydrogen utilizing a developed alkalin... more This study aims to present a quantitative cost analysis of hydrogen utilizing a developed alkaline electrolyzer, a similar-capacity imported alkaline electrolyzer, and a similar-capacity PEM electrolyzer.The research also finds the key parameters that can reduce or increase the production cost. One of the subjected electrolyzers is a locally developed Alkaline Electrolyzer (AE); the other two are similar-capacity imported AE and Polymer Electrolytic Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. The study uses the Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Resources (HOMER) software for estimating the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) and the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) method for hydrogen production cost estimation. Results show that the imported electrolyzers have higher production costs due to import duty, fees, and taxes. The estimated cost is 88.4% (AE) and 110.3% (PEM), higher than the locally developed electrolyzer. The economic changes also significantly impact production costs. Government policies can reduce the cost by rescheduling the hydrogen components taxes.

today's most important concern of Bangladesh is power generation. Government has planned a 1320 M... more today's most important concern of Bangladesh is power generation. Government has planned a 1320 MW coal-fired power station at Rampal near Sundarbans. Environmentalists have indicated that this plant will face environmental issues. So we tried finding the capability of Sundarbans to face carbon emissions. We figured out approximate carbon emission of that power plant using an arbitrary operational model. We found 3.16MKg of carbon emission daily. We used mangrove's carbon sequestration rate to calculate the carbon tolerance level of Sundarbans and found approximately 4.2 MKg of carbon per day. The amount of emission we found here is marginal with the ability of Sundarbans as it is already contributing to sequester carbon from other sources. We studied and showed technology wise carbon reductions. It is possible to reduce 90% to 95% carbon emission by using these technologies. We recommend these advanced technologies to ensure sundarbans' environmental safety.

This paper describes the design, development and performance of a locally developed data acquisit... more This paper describes the design, development and performance of a locally developed data acquisition system for solar PV module with variable load. The system can automatically change the operating point of a PV module and acquire the output voltage and load current into computer and then analyze. To change the operating point, a variable load has been developed by IRF250 MOSFETs. The current drawn by the load from the PV module is controlled by a staircase voltage, which is developed by a counter and a DAC. The count value of the counter and hence the voltage level of the staircase is changed by an Arduino-based controlling unit. To get the short-circuit current, the PV module is connected in series with a high ampere power supply and the voltage across the PV module is conditioned by a difference amplifier and fed to an ADC channel of the controlling unit. The output current of the PV module has been sensed by a Hall sensor, ACS712, and read by another ADC channel. To make the whole system automatic, a program has been developed using Arduino IDE and loaded in the Arduino board. With the help of this program, the system can measure the current and voltage of the PV module and send to a PC. This acquired data is processed by software and the performance of the PV module is obtained. The system has been developed in laboratory and its performance has been studied. Although, there are some fluctuations in the acquired data but with filtration satisfactory performance is obtained. This instrument can be used for PV module testing purpose.

Assessment of Wind Power Potential at the Chittagong Coastline in Bangladesh

A multi-storied building's rooftop in Chittagong Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) is selected as a wind data collection site. The recorded data is analyzed using Weibull distribution functions. Three statistical methods are used to find and compare the Weibull parameters. Weibull probability density function and cumulative distribution are used to explain the recorded data. The analysis shows the shape factor of the site is 1.8 and the yearly scale factor is 2.2ms-1. The highest values of these parameters are found by calculation in the month of June when the maximum shape factor is 3 and the maximum yearly scale factor is 3.95 ms-1. To estimate yearly energy production three different wind turbine models 'Aventa AV-7', 'Enercon E-33' and 'Enercon E-53' are used and the estimation is done using a mathematical approach. The probable wind power production capacity of this site would be around 5457kWh per year and the energy density of this site would be around 11.54 kWhm-2. This research work may be helpful for the design and planning of any wind power plant at the Chittagong coastline area in Bangladesh.

In this paper, MEMS-based capacitive microphone and low-cost amplifier are designed for low-cost ... more In this paper, MEMS-based capacitive microphone and low-cost amplifier are designed for low-cost power-efficient hearing aid application. The developed microphone along with the associated circuitry is mounted on a common board in the form of pocket-type (body-worn) device. The designed microphone consists of a flexible circular silicon nitrite (Si 3 N 4) diaphragm and a polysilicon-perforated back plate with air as dielectric between them. The incident acoustic waves on the sensor cause deflection of the diaphragm to alter the air gap between the perforated back plate (fixed electrode) and the diaphragm (moving plate) which causes a change in capacitance. The acoustic pressure applied to the microphone is from 0 to 100 Pa for an operating range of 100 Hz-10 kHz which corresponds to the audible frequency range in case of human beings. The main purpose of this work is to increase the longevity of battery used in conventional hearing aids. The designed MEMS microphone with Si 3 N 4 diaphragm is capable of identifying acoustic frequencies (100 Hz to 10 kHz) which correspond to a specific change in absolute pressure from 0 to 100 Pa for 2-micron-thick diaphragm with a sensitivity of about 0.08676 mV/ Pa. The design of the sensor and the characteristics analysis are performed in FEM-based simulation software, which are later validated in real time. The prototype is designed using MEMS microphone and low-cost amplifier ICs with biasing components in the form of pocket-type (body-worn) hearing aid. In order to study the performance of proposed device, three different market-available amplifiers with controllable gain are used. Finally, the performance of the hearing aid is studied through audio spectrogram analysis to choose the best-suited amplifier among the three.

This paper presents the determination of the Levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) produced from a PV-based electrolysis plant which is built in Energy Institute, Dhaka University. The analysis uses LCOH and Life Cycle Cost (LCC) methods to determine the production cost of hydrogen. HOMER Energy software has been used to determine the electricity cost. Electromechanical relay and solid state switching device have been incorporated in the charging cycle to reduce the switching loss in solar charge controllers. We used micro controller and assembly programming to maintain the switching sequence as well as the whole charging system. In this paper we have generalized the technique and discussed the philosophy in detail about hybrid switching. We have made comparisons between different switching methods and showed the improved outcome by our system. Hybrid switching is a technique for solar charge controller which can save near about 50% energy in Photo Voltaic charging scheme for the same system requirement.

The process is simple but there are various aspects to be considered for developing efficient system for water electrolysis. This paper presents a practical study on different electrolysis conditions determining conclusion regarding contributing parameters. Stainless steel plates as electrode and sodium hydroxide solutions are used for data collection. Applying different conditions and physical arrangements the process behavior is observed and recorded for analysis. Theoretical aspects are compared with the observed characteristics of the process. Key aspects of parameters are determined by organized data and analysis. It has been found that the higher molarity of solution increases the current density and gas production rate for same size and same gap of electrode. The scenario is same for the increment of electrode size where gap and molarity is fixed. Gas production is directly proportional to molarity and electrode size. With the reduction of gap between electrodes results increment of current density and gas production at same size of electrode and same molarity of solution. Gas production is inversely proportional to the gap between electrodes. Increment of voltage boosts the gas yields however temperature increases after a certain limit of applied voltage. At that point energy gets wasted through heat and not user for water splitting. Solar photovoltaic panels can easily be used for water electrolysis. Though the radiation gets changed over time the gas production would be according to the voltage and current output.

Development and Performance Analysis of a Low-Cost Hydrogen Generation System Using Locally Available Materials

In this paper, a low-cost water electrolyzer is developed and its performance study is presented.... more In this paper, a low-cost water electrolyzer is developed and its performance study is presented. Locally found materials are used to develop the electrolyzer. The electrolyzer has two cells connected in parallel and bipolar electrode configuration. In common, different cells are connected in series but for this electrolyzer parallel connection has been tested. A very thin polymer, Nylon-140 has been used as separator membranes for this electrolyzer. In separator membrane assembly, the designed geometry creates two separate gas channels internally which enables the direct collection of hydrogen and oxygen gas from the designated outlet port of the electrolyzer. The geometry excludes the need of external tubing into each cellcompartments to collect hydrogen and oxygen separately. The developed electrolyzer is found to be 42% efficient with its highest production rate of 227.27 mL/min. The purity of hydrogen is found to be more than 92% and justified with the burn test. The cost is 20 times less than the commercial electrolyzers. The development method and scheme can be helpful to popularize the small scale use of hydrogen in Bangladesh for various renewable energy applications.

Is it safe to have a power plant near Sundarbans? An analytical study of carbon emission and mitigation procedure.

The Government of Bangladesh is sourcing for every possible solution to meet power crisis. A 1320 megawatt coal-fired power station at Rampal Upazila of Bagerhat District in Khulna near Sundarbans is planned to be established. It will be the largest power plant in Bangladesh. This plant will face environmental issues which were indicated by many environment specialists of the country. Carbon as well as Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission is the point of interest. In this regard we tried to find out the natural capability of Sundarbans to face environmental changes implied by carbon emissions. We figured out approximate carbon emission of that power plant using an arbitrary operational model. On the basis of this model we calculated every day carbon emission by the said power plant. We also calculated the carbon tolerance level of Sundarbans. We used mangrove’s carbon sequestration rate per area of land mass. After that we showed technology wise carbon reduction process and percentage of reduction. As of our modeled generation profile RAMPAL power plant will produce 11.6 million Kg of CO2 or 3.16 million Kg Carbon for every 24 hours of operation. On the other hand Sundarbans can sequestrate approximately 4.1 million Kg of carbon daily. The volume of approximate carbon emission from RAMPAL plant is marginal with the ability of Sundarbans to sequestrate. As Sundarbans is already contributing to sequestrate carbon from other sources, if sufficient safety measurements are not taken this mangrove may become demolished. But nowadays it is possible to reduce 90% to 95% carbon emission by using advanced technologies. We have considered those techniques and found carbon and GHG reduction possibility. This work is based on some specific information and data found on other research works. The model can be converted into the in-situ scenario as well. Establishing a clean power plant involves proper planning, financing and many other preparations. This paper may be considered as an endeavor to that critical process.
