An urban sink: Case study of an (im)material metabolism of buildings

In architecture, this means being able to describe the tectonic correspondence between material consequences (how architecture moves material between society and na-ture) and immaterial consequences (how architecture moves human experience and be-havior). As part of an ongoing doctoral study, this paper studies this correspondence in a case study exploring 5 constructs (sub-unit). Hence, the case study explores the tectonic correspondence between the immaterial capacities (experiential, phenomenological) of ar-chitecture and how they affect material flows (waste generation through renovation, dem-olition etc.) in three selected Danish low-dense housing developments. In conclusion, the paper discusses whether/how these immaterial capacities can become active design strate-gies for slowing material flows towards a conception of buildings as parts of a safe Urban Sink.

Tectonic Vocabulary & Materialization: Discourse on the future of tectonic architectural research in the Nordic countries

However, a critical reconsideration of the role of tectonic theory seems necessary when facing the present everyday conditions of the built environment. We see an increasing number of square meters in ordinary housing, in commercial buildings and in public buildings such as hospitals and schools that are dealt with as performative structural frameworks rather than qualitative spaces for habitation and contemplation. On the occasion of the Second International Conference on Structures & Architecture held in July 2013 in Portugal the authors organized a special session entitled From open structures to the cladding of control bringing together researchers from the Nordic countries to discuss this issue. Likewise the initiative to establish a Nordic Network for Research and Teaching in Tectonics is currently...

In this context, architects are generally required to maximize the spatial capacities of architecture towards enhanced social quality and value. Consequently, we need to improve our methods for describing the impact of architecture across disciplines. It is our hypothesis, that tectonic theory provides a potential framework towards such interdisciplinary description by implying a critical discussion of the interrelations between architecture's impact on people's well-being by means of spatial gestures and the detailed prioritisation of resources in construction. As part of a research project investigating the social and socioeconomic value of architecture by juxtaposing architectural, anthropological, and economic analysis, this paper investigates the anthropological dimension of those gestures. Using anthropological analysis, the paper critically evaluates whether and how the key intended spatial gestures identified by the architects (in our previous analysis of the architectural dimension) are experienced by the occupants of the building in the form of lived spatial gestures. Data collection involved 8 semi-structured interviews with the occupants of a mixed-use building complex in Denmark. In conclusion, the paper contributes to the understanding of architecture's role and impact on human well-being, through the discussion of a tectonic framework describing the interaction between architecture and people as a spatial dialogue, in the form of constructed 'gestures' across the disciplines of architecture and anthropology. Hereby paving the way for positioning the question of human well-being related to the economic prioritisation of resources in construction.
