In several cases it is observed that an illustration has been designated as lectotype. However, while selecting an illustration as lectotype it should be ensured that no cited isotype, syntype, isosyntype or paratype exists (which are to be given precedence), otherwise the lectotype designation will not be in conformity with Art. 9.12 of ICN (McNeill et al. 2012). If no cited specimens exist, the lectotype must be chosen from among the uncited specimens and then from the cited and uncited illustrations that comprise the remaining original material, if such exist. Clarke (1874) in the protologue of Championia multiflora Clarke (1874: 99) [currently accepted as Leptoboea multiflora (Clarke) Benth. ex Gamble (1881: 274)] cited “Hab. In collibus Khasia ad 500–5000 ped. alt. In Assam et Bhotan. In Sikkim ad 1000–5000 ped. alt. frequens”. Hence, the relevant specimen...

The description associated with this name is found based on the mixture of two different species, of which one is formally undescribed. Therefore, a new species of Strobocalyx, viz. S. mastersii is described here based on part of the material associated with the invalid name Vernonia mastersii.

We feel it would be better if an Example of inadvertent neotypification were also included. (202) Add a new Example after Art. 9.19, after the new Note (if accepted) of Prop. 046: "Ex. n. Although Herb. Linn. 749.2 (LINN) is not original material for Ocimum gratissimum L. (1753), the absence of any original material means that Cramer's citation of it as "type" (in Dassanayake & Fosberg, Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 3: 112. 1981) is to be accepted as designation (Art. 7.10) of a neotype, pre-dating the explicit neotypification by Paton (in Kew Bull. 47: 411. 1992).

The present communication emphasizes the need of study of type specimens for fixing identity of species. A mistake repeated several times will have a chance to obscure the correct identity of a species.
