Μια ανεξερεύνητη έως τώρα πτυχή της ιστορίας της υπερπόντιας ελληνικής μετανάστευσης των αρχών το... more Μια ανεξερεύνητη έως τώρα πτυχή της ιστορίας της υπερπόντιας ελληνικής μετανάστευσης των αρχών του 20ού αιώνα αποτελούν οι νέες οικονομικές λειτουργίες που αναπτύχθηκαν σε πόλεις-λιμάνια του ελληνικού κράτους οι οποίες διασυνδέθηκαν απευθείας με τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες της Αμερικής και διαχειρίστηκαν την οργάνωση της μεταναστευτικής κινητικότητας έως και τον Μεσοπόλεμο.
Η παρούσα μελέτη εστιάζει σε αυτές τις «μεταναστευτικές πύλες» και στην οικονομία τους. Πρωταγωνιστούν το λιμάνι της Πάτρας, η εταιρεία «Αυστροαμερικάνα», το γραφείο «Γ. Μόρφυ και υιός, Κρωββ & Στίβενς» και τα υπόλοιπα μεταναστευτικά πρακτορεία στην οδό Αγίου Ανδρέου, ο εμπορικός και εργατικός κόσμος της παραλιακής ζώνης, το αμερικανικό προξενείο, οι Έλληνες και οι Ανατολίτες μετανάστες-καταναλωτές, τα κυκλώματα παράνομης διακίνησης μεταναστών, οι οργανωμένες εκδρομές των ελληνοαμερικανικών συλλόγων του Μεσοπολέμου και ο «πόλεμος των λιμανιών». Η μεταναστευτική οικονομία της Πάτρας διασταυρώνεται με τις εργασίες μεγάλων μεσογειακών και δυτικοευρωπαϊκών συγκοινωνιακών κόμβων και τις δραστηριότητες μικρότερων λιμανιών της Πελοποννήσου, όπως η Καλαμάτα, το Γύθειο και το Κατάκολο· διαπλέκεται κυρίως με τις κρατικές μεταναστευτικές πολιτικές, το ελληνικό εφοπλιστικό κεφάλαιο και τα ανταγωνιστικά συμφέροντα του Πειραιά.
Στις Πύλες η υπερατλαντική μετανάστευση αναδεικνύεται ως μια διαμεσολαβημένη κινητικότητα, μια κερδοφόρα και ταυτόχρονα εύθραυστη οικονομική επιχείρηση με διεθνικό χαρακτήρα και μετασχηματιστική επίδραση σε τοπικό επίπεδο.

Spaces of Passage and Consumption: Greek Ports and the Commerce of the Transatlantic Movement (1890–1930)

Greek transatlantic emigration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries integrated th... more Greek transatlantic emigration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries integrated the national port cities of embarkation into new travel routes and broader maritime networks. This opened up unprecedented economic opportunities for all the economic actors involved in organizing a large-scale, temporary labour movement and maintaining transnational links between Greece and the United States. Functioning as logistical spaces, these ports underwent significant economic development and demonstrated their ability to adapt to ever-changing conditions. This paper sheds light on the commerce of transatlantic migration that developed
in Greek ports after the arrival of the Austro-Americana Company and the establishment of national steamship lines in the early 1900s. It traces the circulation of migrant money in local markets offering reception services and travel products, and highlights the transformative effects of labour migration on the economies of transit cities.

The paper examines the initiatives developed by refugee organizations
to compete with the chronic weaknesses of the state administration as well
as their actions to overcome the obstacles, injustices and exclusions reserved
for them by the employees of the rehabilitation services. It further aims to
elucidate the role of the associations as pressure groups against the representatives of the rehabilitation services. At the same time, it analyzes the limits
of their bargaining power in the whole rehabilitation process of the refugees.

In 1954 the Intergovernmental Committee for European Migration (ICEM) launched a program for the ... more In 1954 the Intergovernmental Committee for European Migration (ICEM) launched a program for the recruitment of domestic workers from Greece for Canada, Australia and New Zealand. ICEM gave single women of rural background and with scarce resources the opportunity to migrate and later sponsor the migration of their relatives. Furthermore, ICEM assisted them with orientation and language courses, training programs and loans, and oversaw their transportation and recruitment, as well as of their adjustment to work and life in economically and “culturally” developed countries. In doing so, the Committee tried to imbue women from the periphery of the “Free World” with “superior” western technical skills, cultural values and modern behavioral patterns that reproduced the dominant gender, ethnic, race and class prejudices of the destination countries. The article highlights the way receiving states expanded their capacity to control their borders and select the “qualities” of their foreign female workforce, by standardizing their skills, behaviors and rights. By comparing the implementation of the scheme in three British Commonwealth countries, it problematizes the role of the international organizations in the construction of labor patterns and the dissemination of hegemonic Western gendered economic, social and cultural scripts in a peripheral European country. It also explores the changes brought about by the ICEM in domestic work and women’s response to intergovernmen- tal migration planning.
