Satya Nadella is giving Microsoft a much needed reboot

Nadella is No. 11 on the Recode 100.

Satya Nadella is doing the improbable: Turning Microsoft around by changing both its business and culture.

The company dominated the desktop PC era by selling Windows and Office software on plastic disks in cardboard boxes — to phenomenal profits. Now it is making the shift to a subscription business for its software like Office 365 and Azure, passing $20 billion in “commercial cloud” annual recurring revenue last quarter — well ahead of its goal.

Microsoft shares keep setting new all-time highs, up more than 30 percent this year. And Nadella even had time to publish a book, “Hit Refresh,” about his life story as an immigrant and “the quest to rediscover Microsoft’s soul.”
