Dolaucothi (Ogofau) Gold Mine Wales

by peter.brabham

Most of these images are taken between 1988 and 2000 when I taught BSc Exploration Geology at Cardiff University and we had the lease on part of the the underground workings at Dolaucothi Goldmine (Ogofau) at Pumpsaint Mid Wales, UK. Some pre-date my employment as became in charge of the photo archives and the original photographers are credited if known. I have also added some 2010 digital images from a recent visit.

All Gold in the UK is the property of the Crown so you can only lease a gold mine from the crown and pay a tax on any gold found.

Between 1975 and 2000 the Dolaucothi mine site was shared with the National Trust with the University responsible for the Underground workings. After 2000 with the demise of the mining engineering degree at Cardiff University the National trust took on the whole lease from the Crown commisioners.

I am presently working on a book with Dr Alun Isaac on the restoration of the mine by Cardiff University students between 1975 and 2000. I am looking for interesting photos of the site for inclusion.
