Many current and former Alamedans — and lots of other people— were saddened to learn of Don Sherratt's death July 10 at age 83 after a short undisclosed illness. Throughout his life, he touched the lives of countless others as a park director, coach, teacher, administrator, in his work with the Boys and Girls Club of Alameda and in many other community service roles.

Loyal customers received even sadder news when they learned that Kamakura owner Akiko Yamato — known to most as "Faith" — died Feb. 5 at age 98.

Late longtime Piedmont High School assistant coach and scorekeeper Pete LaChapelle appears previously at his Oakland home with memorabilia from his days as a high school baseball and basketball player in Denver. LaChapelle spent more than four decades coaching baseball in Oakland's Young America League, the Piedmont Pony League and Piedmont High School. Long a ballpark fixture, LaChapelle's acquaintances were saddened to learn of his death Nov. 3 at 84.
