Homeless activists arrested after gardai evict group from vacant city centre building

Gardai confirmed to Dublin Live that officers entered Parkgate House near Heuston Station early this morning where members of the Revolutionary Housing League, as well as other homeless people, had been staying

A number of homeless activists will appear in court today having been evicted from a vacant building in the city centre this morning.

Gardai confirmed to Dublin Live that officers entered Parkgate House near Heuston Station early this morning where members of the Revolutionary Housing League, as well as other homeless people, had been staying. A High Court injunction had been placed on the group last week.

The League, itself an offshoot of the Revolutionary Workers Union, have previously occupied a number of vacant buildings, including the Iveagh Markets, a derelict building on Eden Quay, and Dublin 8 apartments that were being redeveloped for elderly people. They had dubbed Parkgate House "Ionad Sean Heuston" and offered spaces for other homeless people to stay, as well as decorating the inside of the building with murals and hosting concerts.

A number of videos posted to social media showed tens of officers at the scene as they moved up to 50 people out of the building. Members of the collective will now appear before the courts this morning.

A garda spokesman told Dublin Live: "Earlier this morning, an operation was put in place to execute a High Court Order. This operation has since concluded, and a number of males are now set to appear before the High Court later today.

"An Garda Siochana will be making no further comment."
