Marvel Comics has produced hundreds, if not thousands, of memorable characters. This is especially true for the X-men, who are known for mutants of all power levels. Unfortunately, this means that somebody has to be on the bottom. The truth is, not all X-Men were so lucky when their powers were revealed. Some powers are downright dangerous, while others are fairly useless.

The X-Men have created some of the most iconic heroes - people that many readers can find relatable. Likewise, they've created characters designed to break readers' hearts and leave a lasting impression. It's important to remember that not everyone in this universe will get a powerful and shiny ability.

10 Xabi, aka ForgetMeNot

The Mutant With the Unfortunate Inability to Be Remembered

  • First appeared in X-Men: Legacy #3000 (2014)
  • Also known as Nothing Man or Nobody
  • ForgetMeNot's ability is called Unmemorability

Xabi, aka ForgetMeNot, has arguably the most tragic mutant power in Marvel history. What makes his power more tragic is that it is actually pretty strong—in ways he likely wishes it wasn't. Xabi's mutation is known as unmemorability, meaning he is utterly forgettable. This power is so strong that even Xavier can't sense him, not even with the help of Cerebro.

Yes, the tendency to forget about ForgetMeNot applies to enemies and allies alike. Xavier had to implement a psychic reminder to force himself to remember ForgetMeNot. During the Krakoa era, Forge promised to create a device to help the X-Men remember Xabi. The device hadn't arrived by the time ForgetMeNot sacrificed himself to kill Warlock. While he saved Krakoa, it's extremely unlikely anybody was ever aware of what he did.

9 Robert Herman, aka Glob Herman

His Mutation Turned His Body Into Wax, Making Him Highly Flammable

  • First appeared in New X-Men #117 (2001)
  • Also known as Glob, Inhuman Torch
  • His body is made up of bio-paraffin, which is very flammable

Robert Herman, aka Glob Herman, is an X-Men with a unique physiology. He's also a fan-favorite character. Glob is made up of a bio-paraffin, which is a fancy way of saying he's made of living wax. This gives Glob several advantages, from superhuman strength to superhuman durability. However, there are a few downsides.

10 Worst Things That Happened to Mutants in the Marvel Universe

Marvel's mutants are feared and misunderstood and the X-Men have fought so long and hard for the survival of mutantkind through several brutal events.

For starters, Glob has no exoskeleton. Instead, he has a pink exterior with his bones visible to all. Due to his build, Glob's face lacks the most common features, and his eyes are simply floating in the wax. There was no blending in for this character. Glob is highly flammable, a fact he learned the hard way. Glob found a way to turn this into a positive, as he has been seen flinging flaming bits of himself at enemies.

8 Trevor Hawkins, aka Eye-Boy

Trevor's Body is Covered With Eyes

X-Men X-Factor Eye-Boy Krakoa Future 2
  • First appeared in Wolverine & the X-Men #19 (2012)
  • Also known as Blüd Shot, Destructo Eyes, The All-Seeing Mod
  • He also has psychological intuition

As his alias implies, Trevor Hawkins, aka Eye-Boy, is a mutant with many eyes: 57, to be exact. They are scattered across his whole body, making for an alarming first impression. Unlike some mutants with physical changes, Eye-Boy does have some benefits that go hand-in-hand with his mutant ability.

Eye-Boy has several inherent abilities, including enhanced visual abilities such as microscopic and telescopic vision. He can also see in X-ray and infrared vision, among a few other skills. In addition to Trevor's sight-based abilities, he has psychological intuition, thanks largely to how he can monitor people's physical responses to stimuli. The real problem for Eye-Boy is that he can't hide in plain sight or pass for anything other than a mutant.

7 Japheth, aka Maggott

Has One of the Grossest X-Men Abilities

  • First appeared in X-Men #345 (1997)
  • He has been a member of the Morlocks, X-Men, and Generation X
  • His digestive system is two sentient slugs that live outside his body

Occasionally, a character will appear to remind readers that a mutation can be useful and gross. Japheth, aka Maggott, is one of those characters. His unique mutation is that he has a sentient digestive system, which is actually two slug-like creatures. Yes, they have names, and yes, they live outside his body.

Marvel's best X-Men lineups have balanced power, strategy, and diversity to protect both humanity and mutant-kind from evolving threats.

Eany and Meany, Maggot's digestive slugs, can eat almost any material. Once they've had their fill, they return to Maggot to provide energy or healing as needed. As a bonus, this feeding system gives Maggot some basic superhero abilities like enhanced strength and durability. Given his particular mutations, Japheth never stood a chance to blend in with humanity. To make matters worse, Japheth cannot eat on his own. This has two problems. First, Maggot will die if he's separated from his slugs for too long. And second, Maggot cannot enjoy the simple act of eating.

6 Bailey Hoskins, aka X-Ceptional

The Mutant Who Can Blow Up Just Once...Because His Ability Kills Him

  • First appeared in X-Men: Worst X-Man Ever #1 (2016)
  • He was a student at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters
  • His power is self-detonation

Bailey Hoskins, aka X-Ceptional, is a young mutant with an unfortunate power. Some would argue that he has the worst power since using his power would literally kill him. However, Bailey's power is stronger than many others, even if it comes at a heavy price. There's no denying that young X-Ceptional left quite a mark on the X-Men.

X-Ceptional has the ability to self-detonate once. The limit here is that Bailey would not survive the detonation, as he has no durability, shielding, or healing factors. X-Ceptional joined Xavier's Institute to learn control, as an accidental use of his powers would prove fatal. Unfortunately, Bailey Hoskins only lasted five issues before dying. His appearance and death occurred within the same series, appropriately named X-Men: Worst X-Man Ever.

5 Hector Rendoza, aka Wraith

He Has the Unique Ability to Turn His Skin Invisible

  • First appeared in Uncanny X-Men #392 (2001)
  • Also known as Casper
  • His ability can make his skin go invisible, but not his internal organs

As with most other mutants, Hector Rendoza was a teenager when his mutation manifested. Hector, aka Wraith, has the power of invisibility. His invisibility isn't complete, as only his skin turns transparent. His muscles, organs, and bones remain fully visible. When Hector's mutation manifested, he tried to race to the doctors for help. Hector didn't make it there, as locals saw Hector, didn't recognize him, and promptly attacked him.

Later, Waith was recruited by Jean Grey to join her new X-Men team. With Jean's help, Hector was able to control his power, and he learned how to spread this skin invisibility trick to anybody he touched. It served as a useful distraction when needed. Wraith never gained any other abilities, not even durability or strength, so he was always the most vulnerable member of his team.

4 Barnell Bohusk, aka Beak

He Has a Beak and Lighter Bones

New X-Men Beak beats Beast
New X-Men Beak beats Beast
  • First appeared in New X-Men #117 (2001)
  • Also knownas Blackwing, Barry, and Bird-Boy
  • Because of his lighter bones and some feathers on his arms, Beak can glide - but it's hard

At a glance, one might think that Barnell Bohusk, aka Beak, got lucky with his mutation. He has several bird-like features, including feathered arms and legs, plus a beak and even talons. Barnell also has lighter bones, which birds typically have to enable their flight.

Beak can't take to the sky the way mutants like Angel can. Instead, Beak can glide for a short distance, though doing so is quite difficult for the X-Man.

Beak's talons can tear flesh, and he has better night vision than most, so he still has some useful abilities. Beak's strongest attribute is charisma, as the mutant has been seen quickly making friends in many strange situations. This was not always a great thing for the X-Men, as Beak has allied with the X-Men, Exiles, and Brotherhood of Evil at different times.

3 John Arthur Zander, aka Jazz

His Mutation Turned His Skin Blue

  • First appeared in District X #2 (2004)
  • AKA Jazz-E-Jazz
  • He has blue skin and rapping skills

John Arthur Zander is another mutant with a physical mutation that doesn't help him much. Known to the mutant community as Jazz, John's only mutation is his blue skin. That really is it; even the Office of National Emergency declared that Jazz was considered a Low Threat.

The 10 Most Shocking X-Men Stories, Ranked

Spanning decades of history, the heroic mutants of the X-Men have had some of the most shocking stories ever released by Marvel Comics.

Jazz doesn't have a long history in comics. He first came on the scene as a hopeful rapper who ended up working for Toad Boy. Following the events of M-Day, John was one of many mutants who lost his powers (in this case, just the blue skin) and rounded up in a mutant camp. A fellow mutant later killed Jazz, and it does not appear that he was among the resurrected during the Krakoa era, though it's possible he was able to hide from the spotlight.

2 William Hanover, aka Longneck

A Mutant With a Slightly Longer Neck

longneck
longneck, as seen in an X-Men portrait
  • First appeared in New X-Men #140 (2003)
  • A Mutant with a slightly longer neck
  • To add insult to injury, he was de-powered during M-Day

Sometimes, a mutant will get a power that changes how they look. Other times, their only mutation is look-based. The latter proved true for William Hanover, aka Longneck. It must have been a bit of a disappointment when William learned about his mutation. His neck is longer than the average human's. That's it. It's enough to ostracize him from much of the human race but not enough to give him great defensive or offensive abilities.

William Hanover did not get a lucky draw in life, but he tried to make the best of it. He joined Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters and was trained among the rest. He joined Cyclops in the battle against Xorn and later was affected by M-Day's depowering. That is not the end of Longneck's sorrows, as he is currently believed to be dead following an explosion he was involved in.

1 Steve, aka Ugly John

A Mutant With No Real Abilities to Speak Of

  • First appeared in New X-Men #114 (2001)
  • Even though his real name is Steve, he's called Ugly John
  • He has three faces side by side

When it comes to unfortunate mutations, Steve, aka Ugly John, probably has the most useless. Not only does his mutation not help him, but his alias is unfortunate. Steve's mutation is simple yet disorienting. He has three faces squished in the front of his head. That's it. Ugly John's only mutation is his looks, which is not to his advantage.

Ugly John was first introduced in New X-Men #114, where he was saved from attacking Sentinels. This would not be his only run-in with Sentinels, as they later kidnaped him. To make matters worse, Steve was seriously wounded during the process, forcing Cyclops to kill the mutant out of mercy. During the Krakoa era, it's mentioned that Ugly John was resurrected along with many of his fellow mutants.
