In nearby Zhongshan County, thousands of such houses have survived to be listed under heritage protection regulations by the Zhongshan prefectural government, including the several hundred built by those who migrated to Australia (Figure 3). They have become objects of rediscovery for Chinese migrant descendants from Australia and elsewhere, many of whom have visited. their ancestral villages on journeys characterised variously as ‘roots tourism’ (Maruyama and Stronza 2010), ‘heritage tours’ (Couchman and Bagnall 2019), or as ‘roots-searching’ ventures (Louie 2004). Homeland visitation of this kind began in the early 1980s when two-way traffic along the China- Australia migration corridor resumed after its virtual cessation during the years between 1949, when the Chinese Communist Party came to power in China, and the beginning of the ‘reform era’ which was instituted by Deng Xiaoping in 1978, two years after the death of Mao Zedong.
