Sharing ideas and work space with the Romanian sculptor, Con- stantin Brancusi, rekindled his desire to work in stone (Figure 18). Ill health, however, prompted a return to Livorno, where he painted The Beg- gar, a piece he brought later back to Paris and sold to Paul Alexander before showing it at the Salon des Independents in 1910 (Figure 19).
