The quantitative interpretation of VES data obtained on profiles I and K (Petrobrazi area) offered the resistivity sections are presented in figures 2 and 3.

The important influence of the shallow geologic structure on the underground contamination with oil pollutants in the neighborhood of the Ploiesti city is nicely shown by the representative VES curves. They were obtained by averaging all resistivity soundings performed in the Petrobrazi and Petrotel areas (Fig. 6). There are clear differences between the two investigated areas on the resistivity curves, closely related to the shallow geological structure : The quantitative interpretation of VES data obtained on profile H (Petrotel area) is displayed in figure 5. The resistivity anomalies located at the upper part of the geoelectric section are lower in intensity, as compared to those detected in the Petrobrazi area, are less continuous, suggesting a less polluted zone. Even the profile H is situated quite far from the refinery limit, the reason for the lower contamination of the geological formations and underground water is a particular feature of this area — the shallow geological structure includes a clay layer of 5 m thick, that partially prevented the oil contaminant to penetrate toward the phreatic aquifer.
