fun POM ft The shape of the stockings we used was created in 2 steps. First, the knitting; Second, degumming in boilin water with soap and drying on a wooden form , which stretches them smooth and gives them their basic, generic shape.Around the foot, they fitted closely, smoothly and comfortably — on both of us. Round the leg, they were just right for my (rather strong) calves, and a bit wide for Zuzana. But on the ankle, they were noticeably loose. Plenty of 17th C. wearers are depicted with the folds and crumples of drooping stockings, and, knowing how slippery silk is, | expected we'd have to hitch them up a lot. But we didn't. Even when | wore the stockings for a reasonably active exercise session, including jumping and stretching ar so on, they didn't budge. | would like to find out how much anatomical luck is involved (I have the kind of calves which give a good hol for the garter).

On my stocking (the left), | could find no sign of a broken stitch or thread — it seemed as if, perhaps, a stitch had not been bound in the casting off, just caught by friction, so that it worked itself loose easily and quickly.

Women hid their legs and men showed theirs: the reverse of what we are used to nowadays. Every man's legs, especially the calves, were very much a part of his looks, of his attractiveness (or lack of it).

You can actually see the clock in the stockin can also see that the stockings need to be long enough to reach over the knee, overlap with the botton breeches, and be covered by the wrapped garters.

The white thing worn over them is not stockings but boot hose, originally a lining for tall boots, meant to fill t cuff of the boot with expensive lace — here turned into a fashion accessory in its own right. | thought they were sewn from woven fabric, but look — this one has a clock just like ours...
