First was the intro- duction of magazines that depicted the mountain as a leisure space. This raised interest in the Alps, which then led to build- ing the roads, hotels, and cable cars that gave the public greater access to the region. Second, the mountain environment was discussed in grand terms, as if it were virgin land safeguarded by a magnificent patrimony. In a 1939 issue of the magazine Le Alpi, in which an excursionist narrated a journey around Lake Carezza, it is clear how the perception of the area around the lake could be fused with different meanings, synthesizing the pristine features of the forest and the infrastructures of tour- ism in a perfect, coherent Romantic painting: T onan tho hatole nn tho naee bohjnd tho xracZd ontore tho etynning

a, The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano is one of the most popular cultural attractions in the region. The first floor of the museum houses Otzi the Iceman. The mummified body, lying on a glass surface, is held in a climate controlled chamber at a temperature of negative six Celsius and 98 percent humidity, replicating the glacial conditions where he was found. A small, curvilinear corridor allows a view of the body through a small window, one visitor at a time. Otzi was discovered on the Similaun glacier in South Tyrol, near the Austrian border. In analyzing the recovered tools and clothing, which were dated to 3200 BC, 17 tree species were also identified. This indicated a wide range of uses for trees and implied in-depth knowledge of their properties and potential uses. !° 1 1 1 r 4 er.
