TABLE 6 MEAN PRODUCTIVITY CHANGE SCORES OF THE IN-SAMPLE COMMERCIAL BANKS (BY OWNERSHIP CATEGORY ) The results obtained from the exercise indicate substantial fluctuations in mean technical efficiency scores for the observed years. After the upward movement between 2000-01 -2002-03, the mean technical efficiency scores have declined during 2003-04 and 2004- 05.The mean technical efficiency of the in-sample private and foreign banks is somewhat higher than the in-sample public sector banks. Under the assumption of variable returns to scale, the mean technical efficiency of the in-sample public sector banks is 98.8% of the in-sample private and foreign banks. Conversely, under the assumption of constant returns to scale, the mean technical efficiency of the in-sample public sector banks is 91.8% of the in-sample private and foreign banks.
