Corwin was born May 24, 1852, in Binghamton, New York, to Walter S. Corwin and Rhoda Corwin. He became interested in taxidermy at an early age, pursu- ing prepatory courses in the subject at Port Jarvis and later at Cornell University between 1871 and 1874. He received his medical degree from Michigan State University and worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago from 1879 to 1880. During his time at Michigan State, he studied microscopy and anatomy, and served as the curator for the university’s museum for a short time.
