Despite the fact that the transformer is the most efficient of all electrical machines, present energy costs are forcing transformer manufacturers and _ utilities to reduce transformer life-cycle costs while maintaining the manufacturing cost within acceptable limits. A number of new transformer cores [21], core joint types [22], and improved amorphous and grain—oriented magnetic steels [23], have been developed recently in order to reduce the manufacturing and operational cost of transformers. Nevertheless, there exists an alternative technique with which it is possible to improve transformer characteristics without the need to revolutionize transformer design or magnetic materials. By using composite magnetic cores constructed with a combination of different grades of grain— oriented magnetic steels the transformer designer can effectively reduce cost and losses.
