Figure 2 where the output symbols represent the machine’s “response’ to the input, in the same manner as a function returns ¢ value based on its input parameters (although a protoco machine cannot really be equated with a function, as a pro- tocol machine has state). With this identification we car look at the modelling of machines that communicate.
