Occasionally a date survives on the internal surface of an earlier agricultural building which had subsequently been improved. One plastered panel amongst many others with circular symbol: on the walls in the upper floor of the prestigious small early-17th-century stable at Cranley Hall, near Eye, Suffolk has the date March 9th 1774, (fig 16). Between two of the radiating circles scribed into one of the stone pillars facing the entrance at Great Coxwell is the inscription IA 1761, which possibly dates them (fig 6). Possible reasons for adding multi circles to these buildings the collection. The reasons for their application may be in part a tradition for the general protection of animals and crops from disasters such as disease and fire. Severe troubles of these sorts could be ascribed to malevolent beings or the evil eye. Some of the surviving written charms supplied by Welsh conjurors during the 19th century, and found later in barns and stables illustrate these general fears. One might reasonably have expected that a few well-placed symbols would be sufficient to avert trouble and as a protection against malevolence, but a run of disastrous cold weather conditions and poor crop yields over several decades in the last quarter of the 18th and first quarter of the 19th centuries may have given the motivation for covering the buildings with multiple circles at the same time as plastering the internal surfaces.
