Moore’s assertion that the pool was incorrectly placed on the map suggests he was either not using the 1809 OS map or he lifted his information from Bray’s 1802 account. This map was published at 1 inch to 1 mile in 1809 (Fig. 4), and therefore was the first accurate, portable map covering upland Dartmoor available to the public as an aid to its exploration, and on which the pool was clearly marked and annotated. With no grid, its use for navigation was limited, though with its clear depiction of the relief, reading the landscape was much easier and its availability must have acted as a catalyst for wider exploration of the upland, heading into the 19th century.

The use of photography by the press brought a new dimension to the reporting of this remote spot, and such was the significance of a visit to Cranmere Pool that the Prince of Wales (future King Edward VIID) was escorted there in May 1921, where he posed for a photograph (Fig. 8) for the press. In September of the same year, the Photographic Section of the Plymouth Institution were able to record their visit to the pool (Fig. 9), which was posed to take advantage of their reflection in what appears to be a more substantive body of water than the Prince enjoyed. Indeed, at the time readers noticed this abundance of water in correspondence to the WMN letters page, which caused Mr Beckerlegge of the photographic section to reply that:
