Casual piling of paper-based media during traditional tabletop collaboration is an important practice that helps coordinate task and group interactions. Previous research has shown that the ability to move piles around on a table plays a critical role in accessing and sharing task resources. However, existing casual storage techniques for digital workspaces only provide access to stored items at the periphery of the workspace, potentially compromising collaborative interactions at a digital tabletop display. To address this issue, we introduce storage bins, a mobile storage mechanism that enables access to stored items anywhere in the workspace. We also present an exploratory user study involving the use of mobile and peripheral storage mechanisms on a large, hi-resolution collaborative tabletop display. Findings from this study demonstrate the utility of storage bins and further our understanding of the impact of mobile and peripheral storage mechanisms on collaboration at a tabletop display.

Although electronic media has changed how people interact with documents, today's electronic documents and the environments in which they are used are still impoverished relative to traditional paper documents when used by groups of people and across multiple computing devices. Vertical interfaces (e.g., walls and monitors) afford a less democratic style of interaction than generally observed when people are working around a table. In this paper, we introduce Multi-Space, a research effort which explores the role of the table as a central hub to support ad hoc collaboration in a multi-device environment. The table-centric approach offers new interaction techniques to provide egalitarian access and shared transport of data, supporting mobility and micro-mobility [11] of electronic content between tables and other devices. Our observations show how people use these techniques, and how tabletop technology can support and augment collaborative tasks.

The Family Room is a multi-camera, multi-display media space for families. It allows family members to easily share audio and video connections between multiple devices across different households. This is ideal for connecting grandchildren and grandparents for talking, viewing, and sharing activities. The common model used for video chat systems involves people calling one another and accepting or declining invitations. As an alternative, the Family Room uses a room metaphor where each device or location simply needs to join or enter a persistent virtual 'room' in order to share video and audio between locations.

Point-and-Chat ® , most broadly, is software for communicating via electronic text (e.g., IM, Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging, and e-mail). It is specifically designed for people who can see and hear, but cannot read or who are having difficulty reading. For non-readers and poor readers, Point-and-Chat ® includes a built-in screen reader so that received messages can be read aloud by a synthesized computer voice. The built-in screen reader includes patented Point-and-Chat ® features and other design choices that support people with cognitive limitations and multiple disabilities. Design, Implementation and Usability

People can use computationally-enhanced furniture to interact with distant friends and places without cumbersome menus or widgets. We describe computing embedded in a pair of tables and a chair that enables people to experience remote events in two ways: The TeleTables are ambient tabletop displays that connect two places by projecting shadows cast on one surface to the other. The Window Seat rocking chair through its motion controls a remote camera tied to a live video feed. Both explore using the physical space of a room and its furniture to create "bilocative" interfaces.

We have recently begun to see hardware support for the tabletop user interface, offering a number of new ways for humans to interact with computers. Tabletops offer great potential for face-to-face social interaction; advances in touch technology and computer graphics provide natural ways to directly manipulate virtual objects, which we can display on the tabletop surface. Such an interface has the potential to benefit a wide range of the population and it is important that we design for usability and learnability with diverse groups of people.

In general, these processes shift human activity away from real physical objects as sources of information and toward the desktop computer monitor as the interface to information.
