Artificial Intelligence and Future Landscape Architecture

What kind of buildings will our descendants inhabit in the far future? Will the expected drive towards space colonisation lessen the difference between mobile habitats (e.g. spaceships) and fixed habitats (e.g. planet-based buildings)? What role will computing technology have in these new kinds of habitat? How might current developments such as intelligent embedded-agents, pervasive networking, and biotechnology help to shape our future? In this paper we examine the impact of computing technology in current building services, and discuss some of the possibilities for the coming millennium.

The development of computer tools for creating and representing virtual worlds has dramatically increased our abilities to capture salient aspects of the environment and communicate them to audiences remote from the landscape under study. The speed and quality of generation of visual imagery, as well as the editing power computers offer, has already dramatically extended the capabilities of practitioners and researchers in representing scenic views. The immersion, motion, and sound offered by virtual worlds may greatly extend the ecological validity of environmental representations and allow for deeper and more meaningful study of the effects of the real world on human experience. However, while the tools are being widely and increasingly adopted, there has been little discussion of the nature of the advantages being gained, nor the cautions that may be necessary. This paper examines the suitability of Virtual Reality (VR) technology for supporting environmental decisionmaking. We discuss and categorize different aspects of human-computer interfaces and then discuss to what extent the attributes of VR correspond to the needs of landscape representation. #

This paper presents a discussion on the topic of landscape, taking into consideration its algorithmic aspect. More than a background where action takes place, the landscape itself is something in the order of action, contemplating space-time dimensions which encapsulate a series of physical, cultural, technological and aesthetic elements. With an arising algorithmic logic and ubiquity, we have to take into consideration those elements as agents and part of the landscape. These topics are conceptually presented in the first part of the article. The second part describes the methodology and the creation of an experimental art project called Algorithmic Landscapes. The project is a set of iterative actions that take place in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, Paris, France, and Belém, Brazil. These actions include a performance, the development and analysis of images by an Artificial Intelligence software, and a series of poetic operations in these images that are finally exhibited as a video mapping piece projected on the facade of a building.

In previous practice, I sought to contract human consciousness, interactive interface and landscape design together by using computational technics and cognitive neuroscience interference. Thus, this final proposal is aimed to pinpoint the specific issue which speculates in visualization and real-time interaction conditioning with site variables. However, the intentionality to develop my general larger topic should not to be limited by this specialization only. The originality of this proposal is stem from the urgent of interrogating the tactile potential from site experience as well as introspecting the social significance of landscape design. By looking back at the history of landscape architecture, not only the arbitraries existing in decision making is undeniable and inevitable, but also the standards and judgments for evaluation are ambiguous. Even though this proposal knows the difficulty to ever solve the uncertainty, it's holding the optimistic view towards optimizing the efficacy by looking into the certain functions that heavily entailed the landscape design and human experience-the formation of consciousness. Since the consciousness formed our judgements, the judgements inferred our decision making. The foothold is addressed on questioning how many and how much potential the human perceptibility can be developed by auxiliary agency when interacting with the nature. In order to develop this topic, this proposal speculated into three basic cognitive processes: Sensation, Attention and Perception. Those three type of consciousness processing is namely translated into: (1) a considerable amount of processing is possible without consciousness, (2) attention is a prerequisite of consciousness, and (3) consciousness is required for specific cognitive tasks, including those that require durable information maintenance, novel combinations of operations, or the spontaneous generation of intentional behavior. And each category's performance can be measured by six sensory action of the perceptibility: Visual, acoustic, touch, taste, olfactory and thought, which is referenced from the paper: Consciousness: mapping the theoretical landscape, Anthony P. Atkinson, Michael S.C. Thomas and Axel Cleeremans. 2000. By speculating into those six main aspects of perceptibility, landscape architects can be powered to tackle the consciousness trigger elements that can be optimized into the general landscape design. As this proposal is intended to create the tactile interactive interface with computational auxiliaries, the mapping action of cognitive consciousness concluded above is thus served as the opportunity to guide through the whole research to answer the question I addressed above: how many and how much potential the human perceptibility can be developed by auxiliary agency when interacting with the nature. The methodology of this proposal should not be limited, but specifically, to narrow down the scope in considering of the feasibility, is mainly discussed and represented by using computational technics. However, this proposal has a clear claim on not converging landscape architecture with computation practice, nor do it's seen computation as the ontological antithesis against the development of landscape architecture. Instead, this proposal is intentionally combining the merit of those two types of thinking system with a simulating manner to interrogate the potential of influential landscape.
