Service providers face a pressing need to adapt to increasing demands for data-intensive services amidst heightened competition from cable companies. Vectored DSL presents a viable solution for telephone companies to deliver downstream data rates of 100 Mb/s over 500 m by utilizing existing copper infrastructure, particularly where fiber to the home is not cost-effective. Broadband access over cable for next-generation services: a distributed switch architecture

The hybrid fiber coax architecture deployed by the cable service providers has been successful in capturing a substantial piece of the residential broadband access market. In the United States over five million homes connect to the Internet using DOCSIS 1 cable modems. In this article we describe an evolution path to enhance the HFC plant to provide, initially, Gigabit Ethernet (and eventually multi-Gigabit Ethernet) on the trunk and feeder portions, and 100 Mb/s Ethernet on the subscriber drops. This next-generation HFC network will enable cable service providers to address the vast and underserved small and medium-sized business market, as well as offer emerging applications and services to the residential market.

One very promising approach injects 'common mode' signals that superimpose a signal on two regular differential pairs. This technique requires new reliable models for the telephony cables. In this paper, we present models that are based on the Multiconductor Transmission Lines theory. To apply this theory, good approximations for the different physical parameters are indispensable. In this paper, the parameters are modeled and validated with measurements. The measurements are also verified with High Frequency Structure Simulations.

Cable television on fibre in stand-alone networks and in systems combined with telephony

This paper presents details of dedicated cable television systems (stand-alone cable TV), and combined cable TVltelephony systems, based upon the economic implementation of optical fibre technology. The factors that determine the choice of these two approaches are described and examples are given based upon systems designed by Raynet Corporation. Techno-economic issues are debated and the need for effective future-proofing is emphasized. In particular, the critical choice between fibre to the last amplifier (FITLA) and fibre to the curb (F'lTC) is discussed. Architectures are described for trunk and distributed systems and performance characteristics are given for a specific network, optical elements and electro-optic interfaces. Detailed considerations relating to future developments conclude the paper. Crosstalk measurements in DSL rings

Due to the inverse relation between cable length and transmission bit rate, many current DSL deployments do not truly benefit from the wide spectrum of VDSL2. In this paper, we propose a new DSL network technology, called DSL Rings (DSLRs), to overcome the challenge of long cable runs in DSL networks. Utilizing MIMO techniques from the central office to the pedestal and a ring network between the pedestal and the houses, DSLR achieves aggregate transmission rates up to 225 Mbits/s. Measurements on Cat3 cables are conducted to characterize crosstalk interference that is unique to this new architecture. The achievable symbol bit rates are then calculated using these measurements. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed architecture in providing VDSL2 technology over fiber to the exchange (FTTEx) deployments.

At local cable TV headends that incorporate the computer systems and databases used to originate and communicate cable TV services, multiple system operators (MSOs) are under pressure to deliver more interactive capability and richer triple play data streams. The enabling technology to accomplish this must fit into tighter spaces and consume less power than the legacy equipment it replaces. Xilinx FPGAs can deliver the increase in silicon device performance required to meet today’s video and data specifications, and can be reprogrammed in the field after deployment to meet changes in industry specifications that govern data flows. This paper investigates specific techniques suitable for Vectored DSL, their performance, complexity and practical implementation. More specifically, various Vectored DSL techniques for both upstream and downstream transmission are discussed, including the Tomlinson-Harashima Pre-coder (THP), Diagonalizing Pre-coder (DP), Zero-Forcing (ZF) canceller, and Decision-Feedback (DF) canceller. A thorough discussion on some of the practical implementation aspects of Vectored DSL is provided. In particular, various implementation challenges are discussed, including computational load, memory storage, line management, partial crosstalk cancellation, and the effect of imperfect channel knowledge. As well, the potential gains and challenges of combining Phantom DSL and Vectored DSL are also discussed. Illustrative examples are provided based on both measured data and channel models to compare the various Vectored DSL techniques and their practical implementation challenges.

Vectored DSLs with DSM: the road to ubiquitous gigabit DSLs

This paper investigates the Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) data-rate increases possible with the Dynamic Spectrum Management (DSM) methods known as Level 3 Vectoring and Level 2 Band Preference. A suggested sequence of increasingly binder-adaptive DSM steps appears herein to assist and motivate DSL service providers and equipment vendors to progress in use of DSM. In particular, studies of bounds of spectral balancing find Band Preference as a practical method that provides the highest possible Level 2 performance in bundled or unbundled DSL environments. Investigations of vectoring begin with differential vectoring and show very high DSL data rates. These data rates increase further through the use of full-binder vectoring, leading to projections of feasible DSM vectored implementations of multi-100Mbps DSLs.

Cable Measurements Supporting Future DSL Technologies. The ongoing developments in the field of high-speed data transmission over twisted-pair cables (DSL -Digital Subscriber Line) result in methods that can exploit the transmission media with increased efficiency. MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) transmis-sion, i.e., the coordinated use of many pairs within a bundle, is such an emerging DSL technology. A further goal is to maintain a certain transmission quality in the presence of non-DSL noise. For example, cancellation techniques to combat narrowband radio interference, which is generated by radio amateur transmitters and may be picked up by the wire close to the subscriber or by the in-house wiring, become important. The efficiency of these techniques strongly depends on cable properties that have not been the focus of cable measurements so far. Evaluation of binder management for partially controlled DSL vectoring systems

Crosstalk between physically co-located lines is a pressing issue in VDSL2 access networks. In order to enhance the crosstalk mitigation capabilities of the latest extension to VDSL2, vectoring G.993.5, full control over all lines within the same cable binder is required. However, this is not always possible in practical deployments due to regulatory, structural, or late technology adoption constraints. In these cases a technique to minimize interference from non-controlled lines, known as binder management, aims at rearranging the line configuration within each binder. In this work, we quantify the advantages of binder management in a partially controlled setup. We initially establish a model of a commonly used 50-pair cable binder and provide its far-end crosstalk (FEXT) characterization. We then carry out an extensive simulation study for various degrees of control over the lines and realistic line length distributions to yield tangible metrics on vectoring performance for downstream transmission. Our results show that binder management is of limited use in partially controlled systems. Consequently, we provide an additional comparison study to help DSL providers to evaluate the remaining gains of upgrading to VDSL2-vectoring in such scenarios for different levels of dominance in the cable binder.

    Technoeconomic assessment of an FTTH network investment in the Greek telecommunications market

    Recent years have seen an increasing need for higher broadband connections, fueled by novel applications including fifth generation wireless networks (5G). The European Commission is working on achieving specific milestones regarding the development of next generation networks. Many EU countries have opted to adopt a gradual migration path towards the Fiberto-the-Home (FTTH) technology in view of the high costs of implementation. The Fiber-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) architecture, combined with very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line 2 (VDSL2) and vectoring noise cancellation techniques may therefore provide a viable short-term basis solution. Techno-economic modeling and assessment is vital at the initial stages of the development of a telecommunication network investment project involving high capital expenditures for the infrastructure. The present work provides a techno-economic model in order to assess the prospects of such a network upgrade project from a financial perspective, following a three-way migration path. The three stages are: the implementation of the FTTC architecture with VDSL2 vectoring technology, the upgrade to FTTC with G.Fast and finally the migration to FTTH. The analysis is implemented over a suburb of the city of Athens, Greece. Different scenarios are evaluated, predicting profits even from the first years following the investment. The analysis includes the estimation of the degree of market penetration, analytical cost calculations for the implementation and operation of the network and the evaluation of crucial financial indicators, regarding the prospects of the investment in vectoring services. The study can serve as a complete road-map and can be applied in similar upgrade scenarios. The most important outcome of the analysis is that the profits resulted from each upgrade will finance the next step.
