Development of a Web-Based Digital Library, 2023

The advent of the Internet and its accompanying telecommunications infrastructure has revolutionized information and communication technology (ICT), leaving an indelible impact on almost every aspect of human endeavour. This unprecedented progress has led to an increase in developments, research and discoveries in various fields, resulting in an incredible volume of library publications and materials. As a result, the complexity of library systems and their operations has increased, prompting the need to develop sophisticated web-based digital library systems. A web-based digital library system is a large multimedia content information management system supported by a standardized relational database structure. The main objective of this study is to highlight the importance and usefulness of digital libraries to aid in the improvement of knowledge acquisition, especially in the context of university or higher education. To achieve this, the study uses object-oriented analysis and design methodology, which ensures the creation of stable and user-friendly software for both staff and university students. Digital resources which includes books and other educational materials were obtained from an online repository (pdfdrive.com) while the multiple choice questions used in the library were procured from the Safoundry website (safoundry.com). These resources were implemented according to design, using vue.js as the framework and programming language of choice. The finished work was hosted on Firebase which also serves as the back-end of the implementation . Research results clearly demonstrate that web-based digital library implementation has many positive effects on the usability of university libraries, mainly through providing convenient web access. Students performed a variety of tasks using a statistics text presented either in conventional printed form or via the text browser "SuperBook" (Remde, Gomez and Landauer [18]). Students using SuperBook answered more search questions correctly, wrote higher quality "open-book" essays, and recalled certain incidental information better than students using the conventional text. Subjective ratings overwhelmingly favored SuperBook. The advantage of SuperBook appears to be particularly strong for questions that are not anticipated by the author's organization of a text.

World Wide Web authors must cope in a hypermedia environment analogous to second-generation computing languages, building and managing most hypermedia links using simple anchors and single-step navigation. Following this analogy, sophisticated application environments on the World Wide Web will require third-and fourthgeneration hypermedia features. Implementing third-and fourth-generation hypermedia involves designing both high-level hypermedia features and the high-level authoring environments system developers build for authors to specify them. We present a set of high-level hypermedia features including typed nodes and links, link attributes, structurebased query, transclusions, warm and hot links, private and public links, hypermedia access permissions, computed personalized links, external link databases, link update mechanisms, overviews, trails, guided tours, backtracking and history-based navigation. We ground our discussion in the hypermedia research literature, and illustrate each feature both from existing implementations and a running scenario. We also give some direction for implementing these on the World Wide Web and in other information systems.

The surge of interest in the World-Wide-Web (WWW) with its potential commercial payoff has resulted in an explosion of information as organizations join in the bandwagon to publish and do business on the Internet. A related development, Intranet, which basically uses the same Internet technology to building private corporate WWW-based networks, has emerged to provide cost-effective and efficient groupware and information management solutions for organisations. As a result, the HyperText Markup Language (HTML), used for constructing WWW documents, has become a contender for authoring future office documents. With this scenario, this study examines WWW practices and highlights the inadequacy and drawbacks of current publishing on the WWW. This paper will demonstrate the need as well as the advantages in having a hypermedia database system to maintain and manage office or WWW documents and describes the design and prototyping of the D4W3 hypermedia database system.

The World Wide Web took off ten years ago. Its tremendous success makes it easy to forget the more than forty years of hypertext development that preceded the Web. Similarly, modern graphical user interfaces have drawn attention away from the many compelling ideas behind earlier user interface designs. In the present thesis, numerous early hypertext and graphical user interface systems are presented and contrasted with today's Web and desktop interfaces. The designers of early hypertext and graphical user interface systems shared a common objective: the development of a personal dynamic medium for creative thought. Not very much is left from this original vision. Retrospect reveals promising insights that might help to reconcile the desktop environment with the Web in order to design a consistent and powerful way to interact with the computer.
