This article argues that the agent-based computational model permits a distinctive approach to social science for which the term "generative" is suitable. In defend ing this terminology, features distinguishing the approach from both "inductive" and "deductive" science are given. Then, the following specific contributions to social science are discussed: The agent-based computational model is a new tool for empirical research. It offers a natural environment for the study of connection ist phenomena in social science. Agent-based modeling provides a powerful way to address certain enduring-and especially interdisciplinary-questions. It allows one to subject certain core theories-such as neoclassical microeconomics-to important types of stress (e.g., the effect of evolving preferences). It permits one to study how rules of individual behavior give rise-or "map up"-to macroscopic regularities and organizations. In turn, one can employ laboratory behavioral research findings to select among competing agent-based ("bottom up") models. The agent-based approach may well have the important effect of decoupling individual rationality from macroscopic equilibrium and of separating decision science from social science more generally. Agent-based modeling offers powerful new forms of hybrid theoretical-computational work; these are particularly relevant to the study of non-equilibrium systems. The agent-based approach invites the interpretation of society as a distributed computational device, and in turn the interpretation of social dynamics as a type of computation. This interpretation raises important foundational issues in social science-some related to intractability, and some to undecidability proper. Modeling Endogeneity in Civil War : An Agent-Based Approach

A significant theoretical innovation in the civil war literature has been the recognition and explicit theorizing of endogenous processes that interact authority, identity, and violence. However, this has also posed a hefty methodological challenge. Developing creative ways to implement or approximate quasi–experimental designs offers a promising solution – but at the cost of sacrificing attention to external validity. In this paper, we propose agent-based modeling as mediator between these two groups of research. Agent-based simulations explicitly model endogenous processes, while providing a ‘sandbox’ in which researchers interested in causal inference can test counterfactual claims. We demonstrate this role by modeling the emergence, disintegration, and co-evolution of insurgent orders in a dynamic agent-based space. 1 MASON AfriLand: A Regional Multi-Country Agent-Based Model with Cultural and Environmental Dynamics

Abstract—Agent-based models of regions of the international system composed of several countries are few and not as advanced as other classes of spatial computational models on a comparable scale. Most relevant extant models are of a single country or polity, or they model an entire international system putatively comprising all countries as in a world system. Here we present AfriLand, a new agentbased model for developing a large-scale and more detailed model of the geographic region of contemporary Eastern Africa. AfriLand is part of the Mason-HRAF Joint Project on Eastern Africa funded by a multi-year ONR-MURI grant. We present the motivation and challenges behind the AfriLand agent-based model design and a description of the model architecture and dynamics. Spatial and temporal patterns in civil violence: Guatemala, 1977-1986

Civil violence is a complex and often horrific phenomenon whose characteristics have varied by era, setting, and circumstance. Its objective analysis has rarely been feasible at spatial and temporal scales great enough and resolutions fine enough to reveal patterns useful in prevention, intervention, or adjudication. An extraordinary data set simultaneously meeting scale and resolution criteria was collected during conflict in Guatemala from 1977 through 1986. Reported here is its spatial-temporal analysis; reported as well is a putatively novel method for estimating power-law exponents from aggregate data. Analysis showed that the relationship between ethnic mix and killing was smooth yet highly nonlinear, that the temporal texture of killings was rough, and that the distribution of killing-event sizes was dichotomous, with nongenocidal and genocidal conflict periods displaying Zipf and non-Zipf distributions, respectively. Foreign Policy and Complex Adaptive Systems: Exploring New Paradigms for Analysis and Action

In February 2011, a remarkable meeting took place at the Santa Fe Institute (SFI) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. SFI, one of the world’s preeminent academic and research institutions, has pioneered the use of concepts developed in studying complex adaptive systems to address environmental, technological, biological, economic and political challenges. In collaboration with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), SFI brought together a group of policy-makers, academics, development experts, scientists, and Afghan tribal and business leaders. The task was ambitious: to develop new ways of thinking about and working in conflict-affected countries, with a special focus on Afghanistan and Pakistan. The participants had diverse interests, from how to shift to a long-term sustainable development approaches in such countries to how to better counter violent insurgency movements. The work by SFI and others on complexity and emergence in the context of conflict, behavioral dynamics, policy making, strategy formulation and sustainable development served as a framework for these important discussions, enabling participants to explore ways to bridge the gap between foreign policy decision-making process and a more innovative, scientific approach.

This article adds agency to greed-based explanations of civil war by creating an artificial landscape populated with agents (government, rebel, and peasant) and natural resource deposits (alluvial and kimberlite diamonds). We model the incidence of civil war as contingent upon: (i) the government and rebel allocation of revenue -investment in extractive and military capacity, short-term robbery, or spending on social welfare; (ii) peasant support for the government or rebels; and (iii) the nature of the physical landscape -the type, size, and location of resource deposits. Using this exploratory model, we begin to explain contradictory findings from quantitative research on natural resources and civil war, find the relationship between export agriculture and civil war to be determined largely by government strategy, and highlight the importance of measurement, distinguishing between conflict onset, the number of independent conflict episodes, and disparate measures of conflict duration.

This paper examines detailed records from the civil conflict in Guatemala between 1977 and 1986. It reveals a number of novel patterns which support the use of complex systems methods for understanding civil violence. It finds a surprising, non-linear relationship between ethnic mix and killing; thereby inviting analysis based on group dynamics. It shows the temporal texture of the conflict to be far from smooth, with a power spectrum that closely resembles that of other, better understood, complex systems. The distribution of incident sizes within the data seems to fall into two distinct sets, one of which, corresponding to "regular " conflict, is Zipf distributed, the other of which includes acts of genocide and is distributed differently.
