Hydrocarbon production from fractured basement formations has historically been overlooked due to a prevailing belief in their non-productivity. However, substantial evidence suggests that these formations, characterized by intricate fracture networks rather than traditional matrix porosity, can harbor significant hydrocarbon resources. Through improved understanding of fracture dynamics coupled with advanced seismic techniques, exploration for hydrocarbons in basement reservoirs can be both viable and economically beneficial, as exemplified by several global case studies.
