Abstract

From 1880 to 2005, the Eastman Kodak Company manufactured black-and-white fiber-based gelatin silver paper in a wide variety of weights, grades, and formats. Kodak manufacturer records and sample books include details about Kodak paper surface characteristics and are an invaluable resource for understanding photographic paper materials. Using the extensive number of Kodak data books, manuals, and manufacturing records spread out in the collections of three Rochester, New York-based institutions—George Eastman Museum, University of Rochester Special Collections, and Image Permanence Institute—I created a chronological guide to Kodak photographic paper surface characteristics. This guide is not an approximate identification guide for Kodak papers but rather a resource that can be used to fill in gaps and propose questions about Kodak manufacturing history that is no longer easily accessible. The focus of this study is the identification of European machine-coated-paper components: fibres, pigments, dyes and adhesives. The aim is to find proper analytical procedures that will provide paper conservators with a methodological tool to better understand pigment-coated papers, and thus allow them to choose and apply the best possible conservation practice to those objects. A small collection of 12 different objects from the 19th and 20th centuries provided 20 different pigment-coated papers for study. The analytical methods used for material identification were stains, cross-sections, EDXRF, μ-XRD, FTIR-μS and HPLC-DAD-MS. The results confirmed the application of previously published data concerning some coating base white pigments, coloured pigments and dyes, and adhesives. New findings came to light regarding the use of Prussian blue, gold and silver for 19th-century paper coatings. Generally, the results answer the questions of paper conservators regarding the application of analytical methods which the authors hope will support future conservation methodologies.

Paper aging and degradation: Recent findings and research methods

Paper aging and conservation are matters of concern to those responsible for archives and library collections. Wood-derived fibers are mainly composed of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin, but paper composition can also include additives, such as starch, minerals, and synthetic polymers. Therefore, paper is a multi-component material, and because of its complex and varied nature, research findings in paper chemistry can be difficult to interpret. Deterioration of paper is caused by many factors such as acid hydrolysis, oxidative agents, light, air pollution, or the presence of microorganisms. The origin of the cellulosic material, as well as pulping and papermaking procedures, additives, and storage conditions play a crucial role. Comparison of the Surface and Print Quality of Curtain and Blade Coated Papers

Curtain coating is non-contact pre-metered coating process, which offers great potential for improved coverage at lower coat weights for the coated paper industry. Absence of shear and hydrostatic force leads to differences in coating-basesheet interactions and process dynamics currently experienced with other conventional coating processes. These differences may lead to surface characteristics of curtain coated papers that are very different from those obtained by conventional coating methods. Due to these differences, printing attributes of curtain coated papers are crucial to their acceptance in the marketplace. Due to the absence of shear, pigment alignment is not as strong as in other conventional coating processes. In addition, as there is little hydrostatic pressure, binder migration is minimal, so more binder is present at the surface. The increase in binder at the surface improves the interaction of the coating layer with the ink, resulting in a thicker layer of ink transfer to the base sheet in offset printing.

The Exhibition and Characterization of Seven Salted Paper Prints

Seven salted paper prints from the 1840s and 1850s in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art were included in the exhibition, Paradise of Exiles: Early Photography in Italy, from March to August 2017. This investigation analyzed works by Giacomo Caneva; Firmin-Eugène Le Dien and Gustave Le Gray; and Calvert Richard Jones. The study also reviewed period photographic techniques with a focus on gold and "old hypo" toning. In addition to reflected light microscopy, analytical methods included X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Raman spectroscopy. Silver, gold and sulfur were found in association with the image material in these prints. All seven paper substrates were found to contain blue pigment inclusions-either smalt or ultramarine. Measurements taken with a spectrophotometer and microfading tester (MFT) were used to study light sensitivity and real-time color-change behavior. Overall, color measurements indicated that the salted paper prints were relatively stable with the exception of one unusual, bright yellow corner in a Calvert Jones print that contained silver and iodine. A comparison of real-time spectrophotometer and microfading tester measurements indicate that these results do not always correlate for silver-based photographs and requires further research.

The paper used as a printing substrate in electro photographical techniques should achieve appropriate structure, surface and optical properties as well as thermal stability. Printing products are often exposed to negative influence from external climate conditions. Surface treatment with varnishing and lamination is a common solution for protecting the final products against light, higher temperatures and elevated relative humidity.

Traditional Papermaking Techniques revealed by Fibre Orientation in Historical Papers

This work aims to select adequate repair papers, based on fibre orientation information derived from paper objects during restoration, using non-destructive image analysis applied to micrographs of paper surfaces. Contemporary Japanese handmade papers exhibited high values of fibre orientation intensity, while contemporary Korean handmade papers exhibited low intensity values. This difference was assumed to be due to different sheet-forming actions. Model papers prepared in the laboratory by the still sheet-forming and flow sheet-forming methods had low and high values of fibre orientation intensity, respectively. Additionally, the screen side for the flow sheet-forming method had a value of fibre orientation intensity higher than the top side. This fact was logically explained in terms of fibre flow and dehydration rate, and consequently suggests its applicability to distinguishing the sides of ancient document papers. The application of this technique to the Shimadzu Family documents from 1606 to 1859 indicated high values of fibre orientation, suggesting that the flow sheet-forming method had already been established by the early seventeenth century in Japan. The papers of Korean Buddhist sacred books manufactured between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries exhibited low orientation intensity values, and the differences between the two sides were small. This indicates that the papers were manufactured by the still sheet-forming method concurrently with a sideways swing.

Conservation of 1950s black and white photographs affected by cellulose acetate off gassing and adhered with rubber cement

The photograph Albums (2) of the House of Speedo® documents the planning, construction and official opening of the new Speedo mill in Sydney in 1955-56. The album was produced by Vistatone (Australia) Pty Ltd. These albums were used as a frequent show and tell during museum collection tours. Recently it was noticed that they were rapidly deteriorating and were sent to the Conservation department for treatment. The conservation work involved stabilizing the photographs, removal of the rubber cement adhesive and rehousing the photographs into an archival album. The House of Speedo® Album cover is composed of an artificial leather cloth fabric such as Rexine® which contains cellulose nitrate. The plastic sleeves with plasticizer were identified by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) with Universal attenuated total reflectance (UATR) accessory as cellulose acetate and the plasticizer as tri butyl phosphate (TBP), the latter of which was pooling on the front surface of the photographs. There were significant signs of deterioration of the plastic components such as warping and discolouration, as well as acidic off gassing from both the cellulose nitrate and cellulose acetate..

Archival performance of paper as affected by chemical components: A Review

For about two millennia, paper has served as a main medium for preservation of people’s ideas, stories, contracts, and art. This article reviews what is known about the various components that make up paper from the perspective of their long-term stability under typical storage conditions. Literature evidence is considered relative to the susceptibility of different paper components to embrittlement, acid hydrolysis, microbiological attack, and discoloration, among others. The cellulose that makes up a majority of most paper items is demonstrably stable enough to persist for many hundreds of years on the shelves of archival collections, though it is susceptible to acid-catalyzed hydrolysis, which can be accelerated by byproducts of decomposition. A STUDY OF KODAK COLOR PRINTS, 1942-2008

The Eastman Kodak Co. and their coupler-incorporated chromogenic print process, were nearly synonymous with the 20th century color snapshot. Introduced in 1942 and still manufactured today, samples of these prints from intervals across the manufacturing history were studied in detail in order to gain a fuller understanding of the material characteristics of this photographic process. The following aspects of the prints were examined: support, dye cloud structure, layer order, backprinting and stamps, dye and coupler stability, and fluorescence. The prints were documented overall and in cross-section under both visible and UV radiation, using an Olympus AX-70 compound microscope, and a Canon EOS 5D digital SLR. Changes in the print characteristics over time were documented and when possible, correlated to known technological developments. The documentation of these changes over time made it possible to date nearly any print to within a few years. Subsequent findings from this inquiry significantly add to the knowledge about these ubiquitous yet rarely studied photographic prints.

used with black-and-white and color photographs should meet the following three basic requirements: 1. Mount boards and paper materials should not cause staining or fading of prints and should not accelerate the rates of deterioration inherent with a given type of color or black-and-white photograph. The composition, pH, and other characteristics of mount boards and paper products should be determined primarily by what is best for the stability of the particular type of photograph being mounted or stored. For example, with the exceptions of recent Fujicolor and Fujichrome papers, prints made with Kodak Ektacolor Portra II, Ektacolor Supra, Ektacolor Professional, and most other chromogenic papers gradually develop an objectionable overall yellowish stain during normal dark storage

Preserving privately owned old photographs might be challenging. Being paper-based with a gelatine coating, with usually different length and width proportions, they suffer poor handling and improper housing. Easily damaged by being forgotten in the back of a chest of drawer, or even inside shoe boxes, they show problems as creases, folds, fractures, finger prints, fungi attack, image fading and loss, paper abrasions, lack of paper cohesion and paper loss. Conservation and restoration treatments applied to these objects vary in consonance with the preservation problems they show and the type of materials and features they present. In all the cases brought so far to the Paper Conservation Laboratory of the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, the challenges were how to create an identical and proper surface with Japanese papers, to enable Schmincke Horadam watercolours chromatic reintegration. The most difficult problem to solve was which chromatic reintegration technique should be used, particularly in photographs with an embossed paper surface (a honeycomb geometry similar surface), if an undertone should be used and what colour tone, and how to apply the watercolour veiling on the original paper without damaging the original photograph.
