Making Business Sense of the Semantic Web

The Semantic Web Research has resulted in the last years in significant outcomes. Various industries have adopted semantic web technologies, while the "deep web" is still pursuing the critical transformation point, in which the majority of data found on deep web will be exploited through semantic web value layers. In this article we analyze the Semantic Web applications from a "market" perspective. We are setting the key requirements for Real World information systems semantic web enabled and we discuss the major difficulties for the semantic web up-take that has been delayed. This article contributes to the literature of semantic web and knowledge management providing a context for discourse towards best practices on semantic web based information systems.

Semantic Web technology is being increasingly applied in a large spectrum of applications in which domain knowledge is conceptualized and formalized (e.g., by means of an ontology) in order to support diversified and automated knowledge processing (e.g., reasoning) performed by a machine. Moreover, through an optimal combination of (cognitive) human reasoning and (automated) machine reasoning and processing, it is possible for humans and machines to share complementary tasks. The spectrum of applications is extremely large and to name a few: corporate portals and knowledge management, e-commerce, e-work, e-business, healthcare, e-government, natural language understanding and automated translation, information search, data and services integration, social networks and collaborative filtering, knowledge mining, business intelligence and so on. From a social and economic perspective, this emerging technology should contribute to growth in economic wealth, but it must also show clear cut value for everyday activities through technological transparency and efficiency. The penetration of Semantic Web technology in industry and in services is progressing slowly but accelerating as new success stories are reported. In this paper and lecture we present ongoing work in the cross-fertilization between industry and academia. In particular, we present a collection of application fields and use cases from enterprises which are interested in the promises of Semantic Web technology. The use cases are detailed and focused on the key knowledge processing components that will unlock the deployment of the technology in the selected application field. The paper ends with the presentation of the current technology roadmap designed by a team of Academic and Industry researchers.

Presently besides the classic "Web of documents" it is now required to build a technology stack to support a "Web of data," the sort of data we find in databases. The vital goal of the Web of data is to enable computers to do more useful work and to build up systems that can support trusted interactions over the network. The title "Semantic Web" refers to the Web of allied data. Semantic Web technologies enable people to create data stores on the Web, build vocabularies, and provide protocols for handling data. Linked data are empowered by technologies such as RDF, SPARQL, and OWL. This paper primarily put the idea behind the understanding by the computer. The goal is to develop techniques for automatic creation of intelligent web applications which collect information from many different sources, combine information, and present it to users in a meaningful way. This paper proposes a model which has been implemented in an internet setup. The aim of the model is to assemble an application for users where the user lists a set of topic names (s) he is interested in, and the system aids in constructing the "best" usertailored structure, where "best" is characterized in terms of what the user knows about topics.

Ten years have passed since the concept of the semantic web was proposed by Tim Berners-Lee. For these years, basic technologies for them such as RDF(S) and OWL were published. As a result, many systems using semantic technologies have been developed. Some of them are not prototype systems for researches but real systems for practical use. The authors analyzed semantic web applications published in the semantic web conferences (ISWC, ESWC, ASWC) and classified them based on ontological engineering. This paper is a review of application papers published in Semantic Web conferences. We discuss a trend and the future view of them using the results.

1 Executive Summary This report describes opportunities for the DB/IS community to contribute to the advancement of the Semantic Web and the challenges or new research topics presented by the vision of the Semantic Web to the database and information systems (DB/IS) researchers. It is based on the NSF-OntoWeb Invitational Workshop on DB/IS Research for Semantic Web and Enterprises that was held during April 3-5, 2002 at the Amicalola Falls State Park in the northern Georgia mountains.

The Web grew in five years from a development project to a global business. In contrast the semantic Web has spent ten years developing from a plan to introduce metadata to the Web to a suite of technologies that are used in niche markets, but are far from the global commodity business of the Web. There remain fundamental problems in implementing the vision of a semantic Web, which require both original technical research and considerable consensus building to reach agreed solutions. Many of the successes of the semantic Web are in small technologies such as RSS, Dublin Core and FOAF, while the main thrust of research is in big technologies such as ontological modeling and inference engines. The links between the small and large, as well as an understanding of the resulting benefits are required to move the semantic Web into the mainstream Web.

Semantic applications today provide benefits to commercial as well as noncommercial corporations and organizations worldwide. In "Corporate Semantic Web-Wie semantische Anwendungen in Unternehmen Nutzen stiften" [1] (in German), more than 20 existing semantic applications are described that provide value in corporations of different sectors including telecommunications, logistics, manufacturing, energy, health, tourism, publishing, and culture.
