The Interactive Digital TV (DTVi) is a new vehicle of communication that presents significant possibilities for the development of educative related applications. Nowadays interactive digital educative applications still are concentrated on IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) systems and websites. Actually, in order to this kind of proposals be able to reach the DTVi, it is necessary to have proper design orientations lined to the television language, in order to contemplate the educative aims and to assist the learning process of people who interact with such applications. For that, this paper introduces the main questions related to a set of projectual elements definition that guides the information design, interface, navigation and interaction for educative applications with in Interactive Digital TV.

This paper aims to propose a framework to implement a ubiquitous learning service based on softwaredefined television (Sw-de TV) under the approach of softwaredefined everything and cloud computing. The lack of u-learning frameworks and the little convergence of infrastructure and flexibility in educational contexts are some challenges to overcome. Here, we present the general framework and an experimental test. The experimental results indicated a satisfactory performance of the video display for different screens, and a very high relevance to be applied in an educational context. One of the test conclusions is that video processing platforms defined by software offer more scalability and flexibility than a conventional television (TV) infrastructure. Such platforms make possible to adapt content to different screens, favoring the implementation of a ubiquitous learning service in which users can choose the moment, place and device in order to perform a learning activity, having video as its main content.

Player, which is capable of presenting the course in an iDTV environment. The proposed approach has been validated in a simulation and real iDTV Set-Top Box (STB) environment.

This work aims to present strategies for implementation of a prototype of a sufficient platform for building Interactive Services Provider (ISP), which can store, analyze and generate reports based on information derived from the interaction of TV viewers with applications in Digital Interactive Television, characterized by the use of a back channel. In case of brazilian scenario (Brazilian Digital Television System), this work is placed in the context of programs for Interactive Digital TV, considering the communication aspects of applications developed in a generic middleware. Strategies are presented for the development of a layer of software residing on the viewer terminal access. This layer has the ability to communicate with an external server to provide a wide variety of interaction services. The results are shown as well as future work.

Internet-based interactive TV is an emerging field affected by advances in various research areas including communication, interactivity, network efficiency, content management and aesthetics. Despite constantly reducing costs in the area of broadcast infrastructure development, this new medium has yet to claim its market position and recognition. The large marketshare of existing non-interactive technologies may be identified as the principal factor for non-adoption of new broadcasting technologies, followed by various quality-of-service issues and the absence of a widely accepted standard for interactive broadcasting that does not permit the development of devices that support interaction in an out-of-the-box user-experience. On the experimental forefront, educational institutions are exploring the capabilities of highbandwidth networks and experimental interactive content, setting the standards for the development of new digital services. Particular types of content such as interactive installation art, games and multimedia presentations that require synchronised content communication are aided by the development of custombuilt interactive broadcasting infrastructures offering alternative methods of content deployment, presentation and interaction. In this work we are mainly concerned with the development strategy of an interactive TV studio, the integration of existing technologies under common environments, user-related usability issues and aesthetics, while open source software solutions are employed to reduce cost. The reduction of development, production and broadcasting costs offers new opportunities that enable user groups to clearly expand and offer a high-quality media experience in global scale.

Digital Television in Brazil is being implemented with extensive support of public policies to promote social inclusion through e-government services and the formation of a network of distance education. he Interactive TV (iDTV) allows a lot of services that combine video and data offering the user more control over the content and services compared to traditional services of TV, thus becoming an interactive form of communication. Consequently, new content should be researched and developed in the form of learning objects (LO) specifically for T-learning. This article aims to discuss papers existing in international databases whose subject is about adaptation of LO to the context of iDTV. The results of the research have presented that there are several initiatives for the production of LO for iDTV in the world, with emphasis on the T-MAESTRO project and the ATLAS project in Spain and the BEACON project in Brazil/Europe. However, it is perceived that the development of the content and services are in the beginning, because today is largely used primarily for the information and communication technologies and should be adapted to iDTV.

The interactive educational television system proposed in this paper enables the participants in a satellite TV session to view and hear the presenters via a typical satellite broadcast system and interact with the presenters and each other using an Internet computer conferencing system. Thus it consists of two parallel information systems operating side by side, with the added ability to display the Internet conference output on the television broadcast. The base layer consists of a typical satellite TV broadcast system. The second is an Internet multiuser conferencing system, such as a multiuser dimension (MUD).

We explore the potentials to expand the power of iDTV by delivering interactive learning into the home and present open issues and development experience respectively. This paper presents a standardization proposal for unified development of interoperable applications among Digital TV, Web and Mobiles. The main objective is to avoid redundancy in the content production, focusing on the adaptation among the different platforms instead of exclusive creation and maintenance for each one. Many recommendations based on worldwide standards are presented, seeking to minimize the ruptures on the current processes of learning objects creation. To validate the proposal, two interoperable applications were developed, one involving just texts and menus, and the other much more complex, involving a complete educational course. Both applications validated the presented proposal successfully.

Much hope has been placed in the past on Educational Television for improving educational standards and distance education. However, in many countries the impact of this technology has been limited. Some of the reasons are discussed along with possible technical solutions. One solution that has been developed at HP Labs India is presented. This involves the use of satellite TV channels, using the MPEG format, as the distribution channel for educational content in digital form. Inexpensive TV equipment, including those that work with Direct To Home (DTH) TV transmissions are used to capture TV programs in digital form and store them on a server. The system is also capable of capturing text content being sent with the program in the Electronic Program Guide format as well as content in various other data formats including PDF. All captured content is stored in a digital library, offering students an on-demand video facility on campus. Easy search facilities are also offered to help find content items of interest.
