Design and Experimental Setup of Pedal Operated Water Pump

A study was undertaken to design and construct a low-lift pedal pump for use in small irrigation project areas. For this purpose, different types of piston valves and check valves were constructed and tested at different suction heads in the laboratory to evaluate their performances. After several trials, Piston valve type-II and check valve type-III were found to be suitable. The average discharges of the pumps ranged from 93.27 to 53.27 litre per second were noted against heads of 0.60 to 2.0 m respectively, when piston valve type-II and check valve type-III were used. During pedal pump operation, less input power was needed and it can be operated by one adult man for a long time (more than 2 hours) continuously without being tired. Efficiency of the pump was 46.53 percent against a head of 1.65 m. The pedal pump can be constructed using local materials and skill. It would be suitable to irrigate small and fragmented land holdings, especially to pump water from a shallow depth (up to 2 m) to irrigate small plots like vegetables and seed beds with less physical effort.

This paper analyzes the design of a pedal powered purified water supply device to be used by local dwellers. It works on the principle of compression and sudden release of a tube by creating negative pressure in the tube and this vacuum created draws water from the sump into the pump while rollers push the water through to the filter where adsorption takes place to purify the water. The design composed a peristaltic pump powered by paddling, a carbon filter and hose or flexible tube. As the operator sits on the seat and paddles, the pedal crank transfer the motion to the rotor thus the rollers and the tube is squeezed by the set of rollers to move the fluid. The design analysis shows that one revolution of the pedal gives 1.1 litres of water. This design will reduce the labour, cost and weariness caused by transporting and sanitizing drinkable water for use in the homes of Ghanaian villages.

A Water system includes a reciprocating pump operated by pedaling power. The pump set and includes a housing in which a foot pedal and drive shaft rotate an eccentric pin rotating with the drive shaft moves a connecting rod which in turn causes push rod to move linearly. The pushrod extends into a pressure tight chamber formed above the rising main. A pump rod connected to the push-rod extends to the conventional plunger through verified motion. Pumps are a common means of lifting water from a clean ground water source to a useful point of access, but all pumps have moving parts and are therefore destined to break proper selection of a pump will reduce undesirable downtime and will empower the local community to manage their water source. Here we use the foot pedal pump, powered by our legs instead of arms to lift the water from a depth range of seven meters. With minor exceptions, it was only with the invention of the sliding-seat rowing shell, and particularly of the bicycle, that legs also began to be considered as a normal means of developing power from human muscles A person can generate four times more (1/4 horse power (hp)) by pedaling than by hand –cranking. At the rate of 1/4hp, continuous pedaling can be done for only short periods, about 10 minutes. However, pedaling at half this power (1/8 hp) can be sustained for around 60 minutes. The main use of pedal power today is still for bicycling at least in the high-power range (75 watts and above of mechanical power). In the lower-power range there are a number of use of pedal power for agriculture, construction, water pumping, and electrical generation that seem to be potentially advantages, at least when electrical or internal-combustion engine power is unavailable or very expensive.

Purpose: Analyze the level of efficiency, effectiveness, and convenience of using a pedal-powered water pump for irrigation activities. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a qualitative approach by conducting interviews, observations, and documentation on farmers in Carat Village, Pasuruan Regency and conducting descriptive analysis of the data that has been collected. Findings: The results show that the use of a pedal-powered water pump has various benefits, including efficiency, effectiveness, convenience for farmers, and other benefits. Most households use well to get clean water. The water is distributed by pumping system. Pumps which broadly distributed in the market are mostly centrifugal types. This kind of pump has a simple construction and a low cost. Therefore, people from different classes can use centrifugal pump. One of its weaknesses is its small capacity. This weakness makes the motor is forced to work harder. When the pump machine works beyond its limit, the needs of electricity is increasing. It means that the performance of the pump is not optimum and the rate of the efficiency is decreasing. The use of electricity which is generally high for a pump, makes the electric charge of the centrifugal pump is more expensive and will make the operational cost increases. People are then forced to buy a better-qualified pump with higher costs. The availability of various pump brands for households make the society should be more selective in choosing a pump for their needs. This study is proposed to analyze water pump efficiency in a household used by the society.

This study was carried out in a laboratory to evaluate the performance and operational suitability of constructed hand and pedal pump for utilized in a small fragmented land. In market, there are many manually operated pumps but its have some problem on operation as well as cost involvement. Due to overcome these issues, different types of piston valves and check valves were constructed and tested at various suction heads in the laboratory to find out the best combinations of piston and check valves, which will gives more discharge rate, low input power requirement and high efficiencies. The pumps are constructed using local materials and skill. After several trials, Piston valve type-II (rubber flap mounted perforated cast iron disc of slot size 11mm and about 4 slot openings per 2.54 square cm) and check valve type-III (rubber flap mounted perforated cast iron disc of slot size 7 mm and about 10 slot openings per 2.54 square cm) were found to be suitable. According to the results, using above combination the average discharges of the pumps ranged from 113.58 to 68.71 lpm and 93.27 to 53.27 lpm against heads of 0.60 to 2.0 m for hand and pedal system, respectively; and the efficiencies of 45.57 and 46.53 percent were obtained for hand and pedal pumps, respectively, against a head of 1.65 m. During pedal system, the less input power was required than that of the hand system. Both in the hand and pedal pump operation, one adult man can operate it for a long time (more than 2 hours) continuously without being tired. It would be suitable to pump water from a shallow depth (<2 m) to irrigate small plots like vegetables and seed beds with less physical effort.

A study was undertaken to design and construct a low-lift double pedal, double cylinder operated pump for use in small irrigation project areas. The double pedal pump was operated by one adult man power.The pump discharge rate, speed, maximum lift, discharge length, suction head and efficiency were determined.The average discharges of the pump ranged from 10.1 to 1.6 litres per minute were noted against heads of 0.35 to 2.1m. It was observed that the discharge rate depends on effort applied by operator and suction head.

ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Pumps efficiency depends largely on the rotating impellers to provide rotary motion for constant supply of water for either domestic or industrial purposes. More so, all manually operated pumps uses the same principles of operation. However, to maintain th the desired destination, energy is required. The stress and fatigue associated with manual operations generally creates epidemiological conditions among users of locally fabricated manual pumps mostly propelled b calls for urgent attention. The aim of this project was to design, fabricate, test run and deliver a locally made manual pump with a higher efficiency, ease of use and lo Also the project can be used as a teaching aid for undergraduate students. The method adopted in the actualisation of the set goals include the re design of the impellers and the volutes using locally available materials. Also are also incorporated. The results when compared with the existing hand propelled pump showed a remarkable difference in the volume of water discharged with respect to time and a fatigue level. The overall ease of use minimised the effects of muscular skeletal disorders among farmers.

Multi-function tool is one of the solutions offered to solve the recent problems of human beings, especially in health and water supply problem. A static bike was one of the fitness equipment resulting in wasted power. In this work, the power of static bike was proposed to drive peristaltic pump which complies water supply for human beings. The peristaltic pump was chosen due to its simple construction and its low torsion requirement to transport water with the height of five meters. The proposed equipment was constructed by the components which were easy to find. It was examined by comparing the time whether hand and static bike driver. The experimental results showed that the proposed equipment which integrating the function of the peristaltic pump and static bike produced multi-function tool which was versatile to do the daily sport of human beings.
