Abstract
The design of foundations constitutes a major step for each civil engineering structure. Indeed, the stability of those structures relies on cost-effective and adequately designed foundation solutions. To come up with an optimized design of a foundation, the geotechnical study passes several steps: the geotechnical survey including in situ and laboratory tests, the synthesis of geotechnical parameters to be considered for the design, and the suggestion of foundation solution avoiding over estimated cost and ensuring suitable method of execution. In this chapter, the three currently practiced categories of foundation are briefly introduced. Then, two illustrative Tunisian case histories are analyzed to explain, first, when the practiced foundation solution was inadequately chosen how a non-cost-effective solution can be avoided, and second, why an unsuitable foundation solution can lead to the stopping of the structure functioning and then how to proceed for the design of retrofit so...

The main aim of the article is demonstrating successful design of spread foundations of a commercial centre building, where geotechnical monitoring allows us to check design efficiency and calculate reliability in comparison with real vertical deformation of building. Introduction to the case study area and building structure and foundations was done in previously published first part of the article in which engineering geological conditions were described. There was also presented a comparison of calculated vertical settlement of selected footings with the real geodetic measurement provided during construction time till the period of two years’ operation time after completion of civil works. Geotechnical engineers do not have many opportunities to evaluate their designs, especially when everything passes successfully. Our presented case study is one of the examples, which could be evaluated from the point of view of reliability index of design adjusted with real geodetic measuremen...

Before the actual construction process starts, it is important to conduct a site investigation and soil exploration to acquire vital information about the soil and site conditions. In a construction site investigation is the first and crucial step. These are outlined in the project to ensure that the site is appropriate for the proposed construction and to offer recommendations on the design and construction processes. Following soil investigation based on the soil report, further geotechnical design of a shallow foundation was performed; however, the results indicated that the load coming from the structure was less than the results of the shallow foundation, so we opted for the geotechnical design of a pile foundation, which resulted at an end bearing capacity greater than the load coming from the structure. The geotechnical design of the pile consists of recommending the size of the pile and calculating the safe working load of each pile.

In Foundation Design: Theory and Practice, Professor N. S. V. Kameswara Rao covers the key aspects of the subject, including principles of testing, interpretation, analysis, soil-structure interaction modeling, construction guidelines, and applications to rational design. Rao presents a wide array of numerical methods used in analyses so that readers can employ and adapt them on their own. Throughout the book the emphasis is on practical application, training readers in actual design procedures using the latest codes and standards in use throughout the world. Presents updated design procedures in light of revised codes and standards, covering: American Concrete Institute (ACI) codes Eurocode 7 Other British Standard-based codes including Indian codes Provides background materials for easy understanding of the topics, such as: Code provisions for reinforced concrete Pile design and construction Machine foundations and construction practices Tests for obtaining the design parameters Features subjects not covered in other foundation design texts: Soil-structure interaction approaches using analytical, numerical, and finite element methods Analysis and design of circular and annular foundations Analysis and design of piles and groups subjected to general loads and movements Contains worked out examples to illustrate the analysis and design Provides several problems for practice at the end of each chapter Lecture materials for instructors available on the book's companion website Foundation Design is designed for graduate students in civil engineering and geotechnical engineering. The book is also ideal for advanced undergraduate students, contractors, builders, developers, heavy machine manufacturers, and power plant engineers. Students in mechanical engineering will find the chapter on machine foundations helpful for structural engineering applications. Companion website for instructor resources: www.wiley.com/go/rao

Cost, time and quality are the main targets in the design and implementation of any foundation. It represents an important part of any building, dam, bridge, tower, etc. The design of foundations requires: the load that will be transmitted by the structure to the foundation, knowledge of the geological conditions in order to understand the type of soil that is presented under the foundation e.g. soil nature, soil layers and groundwater depth, the behavior and stress of soil. In addition the standards of the building codes are of importance. Most problems that appear in Iraq during implementation and after finishing are related to soil and concrete problems. Especially, problems due to water or aggregate (stone and sand) or in cement manufacturing. This thesis aims to analyze soil and shallow foundations of buildings to reach the optimal type should be used to minimize cost with control over quality. Also, suggested a new sustainable material mixture for the three regions of Iraq. Mo...

It discusses aspects related with seismic load definition, dynamil'. soil properties, field and laboratory testing equipment, geoseismic instrumentation of prototypes, foundation seismic stability, use of artificial intelligence, among others. It also points out areas where more research is needed to better our knowledge on the physics of the problem and to improve experimental and numerical techniques, with the purpose of making more reliable and less costly foundation systems. 2 SOIL SITE INVESTIGATIONS Field and laboratory investigations should, in general. be oriented to define soil deposit stratigraphies; hydraulic conditions of site pore water; soils index properties; static and dynamil'. stress-strain soil behavior; and postearthquake shaking behavior uf soils. Potentially liquefiable granular materials should be identified at this stage. 2.1 Field tests
