Mobile devices, such as cellular phones, personal digital assistents (PDAs), and organizers, are becoming increasingly popular. Due to the high volatility of those devices, the achievable quality-of-service (QoS) for mobile services can hardly be predicted. Even for one particular type of device -say a PDA -the implementation of a mobile service may use different communication interfaces over time (i.e.; wireless LAN, IrDA).

The rapid development of the Internet opens wide opportunities for various types of network services. Development of new network services need the support of a powerful design framework. This paper describes such a design framework that can help service providers to build platform independent hardware-software co-designed services. Those new services consist of both software and hardware components, which can be reconfigured through the network. The new design framework can be considered as a Java framework with a hardware extension. Part of the measurement results and an application demonstrator are given.

The development of network management applications is mainly lined with the Simple Network Management Protocol. This architecture, regardless of some shortcomings, has managed not only to survive but also to evolve, achieving a more complete set of features. This fact, combined with its inherent simplicity and coarse API availability, has pushed it to a dominant position in today's network management.

Mobile computing extends the horizons of conventional computing model to a ubiquitous computing environment that serves users at anytime, anywhere. Most distributed applications and services were designed with the assumption that the terminals were powerful, stationary and connected to fixed networks. One of the biggest challenges in future application development is device heterogeneity. In the future, we expect to see a rich variety of computing devices that can run applications. These devices have different capabilities in processors, memory, networking, screen sizes, input methods, and software libraries. We also expect that future users are likely to own many types of devices. Depending on users changing situations and environments, they may choose to switch from one type of device to another that brings the best combination of application functionality and device mobility. Applications, middleware, and systems can be measured in a variety of dimensions, including usability, distributability, integration, conformance to standards, extensibility, internationalizability, manageability, performance, portability, scalability reliability-fault tolerance and security. We call these pervasive attributes, since they can apply to the system as a whole, not just to the system's components. In this paper we have designed and implemented a secure and reliable application framework called the Platform for Device and Computation Management (PDCM) system that can both assist developers to build multi-platform applications that can run on heterogeneous devices and allow a user to move/migrate a running application among heterogeneous devices.

Developing ubiquitous applications is particularly complex. Beyond the dynamic aspect of such applications, the evolution of computing towards the multiplication of mobile access terminals is not making things easier. One solution to simplifying the development and use of such applications is to use software platforms dedicated to deployment and adaptation of applications and handling the heterogeneity of peripherals. They allow designers to focus on business aspects and facilitate reuse. The Kalimucho platform was designed and developed against this background. It executes and supervises applications based on software components.

The increasing complexity in current distributed embedded systems (DES) makes its design a hard task that involves several aspects like distribution middleware selection, QoS support, implementation language selection, application dynamic reconfiguration or application deployment and maintenance. These design considerations must provide a solution to non functional requirements that distributed applications nowadays demand (e.g. Hardware heterogeneity, real time requirements, energy constraints, security, safety or fault tolerance). This paper proposes a management platform for distributed component based applications that follow the SCA (Service Component Architecture) standard. This platform provides several functionalities that range from application deployment and life cycle control to QoS and fault tolerance support.

Operating systems for reconfigurable computing are becoming an attractive field of research. They provide a well-defined programming model and a run-time environment, which greatly simplifies the development process and management of reconfigurable applications. One of the main challenges for the design of such systems is to provide both powerful and efficient abstractions to deal with the complexity of the integration between hardware and software domains in general, and the special features of the reconfiguration process in particular. The contributions in this paper try to give solutions to both problems, first taking a distributed system approach based on system-level middleware, and second providing transparent reconfiguration as one of the advanced services provided by the middleware.

In a competitive world where enterprises have to continually release new and better services, there is a constant need to assimilate new capabilities and extend software applications functionalities. Nowadays these requirements have been translated into mobile environments, making the extension of mobile applications a challenge from the scalability perspective. In this paper, a mobile and flexible software architecture is presented. It allows the integration of third party mobile services to the developed platform, making the extension of a mobile application a dynamic task. By doing so, users can consume a service from their mobile devices through a dynamic user interface. This flexible architecture permits the aggregation of services without having to modify the mobile system, and therefore, it increases the application scalability and practicality in terms of its deployment and maintenance.
