We attempted to demonstrate that timing performance on a temporal discrimination would be enhanced if rats were required to fill a duration with behavior than when they were not required to respond. Six rats were trained to discriminate between a 3- and 9-s stimulus in a symbolic-matching-to-sample task. In two conditions, a tone was used to signal the sample, and in the other two conditions, a light was used to signal the sample. In two conditions, the rats were required to respond on a lever mounted on the rear wall of the experimental chamber before making their discriminative response to one of the two levers mounted on the front wall of the experimental chamber. In the other two conditions, the rear lever was not presented during sample presentation, and no response was required. Consistent with our predictions, timing performance was significantly better when a lever-response was required during sample presentation than when no response was required.

Mental timing studies may be influenced by powerful cognitive illusions that can produce an asymmetry in their rate of progress relative to neuronal timing studies. Both types of timing research are also governed by a temporal asymmetry, expressed by the fact that the direction of causation must follow time's arrow. Here we refresh our earlier suggestion that the temporal asymmetry offers promise as a means of timing mental activities. We update our earlier analysis of Libet's data within this framework. Then we consider the surprises which often occur on those rare occasions when neural timing experiments parallel mental timing work exactly. Together, these surprises and asymmetries prescribe a relentlessly meticulous and fully transparent exposition of timing methods, terms, and concepts which shuns plausible narratives, even when buttressed by rigorous formal models, unless guided by apposite empirical evidence.

The behavioral theory of timing assumes that timing is governed by a pacemaker whose pulses move organisms from one state to the next, and that the speed of the pacemaker covaries with the rate of reinforcement in the experimental context. The goal of the present experiments was to clarify just what constitutes that context. In Experiment 1, pigeons responded on signaled fixed-interval20-sec and 40sec schedules offood reinforcement that were presented randomly within sessions (alternating condition) or between sessions (isolated condition). In Experiment 2, pigeons categorized the duration of a short or a long set of intervals in the alternating or the isolated condition. Performance in both experiments was under strong control by the signals, with scalar timing between long and short sets, but no significant differences between the alternating and isolated conditions. The context of reinforcement that determines pacemaker period can thus be specific to a particular timing task and signal.

We base a theory of timing on the observation that signals of reinforcement elicit adjunctive behaviors. The transitions between these behaviors are well described as a Poisson process, with a rate constant proportional to the rate of reinforcement in the experimental context. These behaviors may come to serve as the basis for conditional discriminations of the passage of time. Varying the rate of reinforcement will generate distributions of behavior whose mean and standard deviation vary proportionately. Holding the rate of reinforcement constant while manipulating the intervals to be judged will generate different functional relations between the mean and standard deviation, and these will lead to bisection at or slightly above the geometric mean, depending on the measure of bisection employed. The correlation between the rate of the Poisson process and the rate of reinforce- ment implies that psychometric functions should be affected by the rate of reinforcement. This prediction is confirmed. Weextend the modelsderived from this theory to other phenomena,such as tem poral generalization and discrim ination, subjective shortening, and paired com parisons of intervals. Current models of choice between delayed reinforcers are consistent with our theory of timing.

Behaviour occurs in time, and precise timing in the range of seconds and fractions of seconds is for most living organisms necessary for successful interaction with the environment. Our ability to time discrete actions and to predict events on the basis of prior events indicates the existence of an internal timing mechanism. The nature of this mechanism provides essential constraints on models of the functional organisation of the brain. The present work indicates that there are discontinuities in the function of time close to 1 s and 1.4 s, both in the amount of drift in a series of produced intervals (Study I) and in the detectability of drift in a series of sounds (Study II). The similarities across different tasks further suggest that action and perceptual judgements are governed by the same (kind of) mechanism. Study III showed that series of produced intervals could be characterised by different amounts of positive fractal dependency related to the aforementioned discontinuities. In conjunction with other findings in the literature, these results suggest that timing of intervals up to a few seconds is strongly dependent on previous intervals and on the duration to be timed. This argues against a clock-counter mechanism, as proposed by scalar timing theory, according to which successive intervals are random and the size of the timing error conforms to Weber's law. A functional model is proposed, expressed in an autoregressive framework, which consists of a single-interval timer with error corrective feedback. The duration-specificity of the proposed model is derived from the order of error correction, as determined by a semi-flexible temporal integration span.

A rich tradition of normative psychophysics has identified two ubiquitous properties of interval timing: the scalar property, a strong form of Weber's law, and ratio comparison mechanisms. Finding the neural substrate of these properties is a major challenge for neurobiology. Recently, advances have been made in our understanding of the brain structures important for timing, especially the basal ganglia and the cerebellum. Surgical intervention or diseases of the cerebellum generally result in increased variability in temporal processing, whereas both clock and memory effects are seen for neurotransmitter interventions, lesions and diseases of the basal ganglia. We propose that cerebellar dysfunction may induce deregulation of tonic thalamic tuning, which disrupts gating of the mnemonic temporal information generated in the basal ganglia through striato-thalamo-cortical loops.

Models of interval timing typically include a response threshold to account for temporal production. The present study sought to evaluate the dependent concurrent fixed-interval fixed-interval schedule of reinforcement as a tool for selectively isolating the response threshold in rats, pigeons, and humans. In this task, reinforcement is available either at one location after a short delay or at another location at a longer delay. Because the reinforced location is not signaled, subjects normally respond on the first location and, if reinforcement is not delivered, then switch to the second location. The latency to switch between locations served as the primary dependent measure. After training rats, pigeons, and humans with equal reinforcement magnitudes in the short and long delays, the magnitude of reinforcement was increased threefold on the long-delay location. Consistent with model predictions, this biasing procedure decreased estimates of the response threshold of rats and pigeons, but also reduced temporal control in these species and increased response-threshold estimates in humans. Human and pigeon performance also suggested a magnitude-induced increase in the speed of the internal clock. Collectively, these results suggest that differences in reinforcement magnitude between response alternatives appear to modulate the response threshold, but not selectively, and may provide guidance for better isolating response threshold effects in humans.
