Abstract

Probiotics are the microorganism which imparts beneficial effect in the human body. The consumption of Probiotic in the form of powder, capsule and drinks restore the beneficial microflora in gut and in turn help the human being by enhancing immune system. The present review focusing on the role of Probiotics for its possible role in controlling and treating diseases such as urinary tract infection, diarrheal disease caused by bacteria, oral infection i.e. gingivitis, oral cavity and cancer. This review also focuses on regulation, side effect, safety and future prospects of Probiotics. Keyword: Probiotics, UTI, Oral hygiene, Diarrhea

The term probiotics is a relatievly new word meaning “for life” and is currently used to name bacteria associated with beneficial effects for humans and animals. The development of resistance to range of antibiotics by some important pathogen has raised a possibility of return to pre antibiotic dark ages. So there was need of new treatment paradigm to be introduced to treat periodontal diseases. This need was fulfilled by the introduction of probiotics. Probiotics are counterparts of antibiotics thus are free from concerns for developing resistance, further they are body’s own resident flora hence are most easily adapted to host. The buzz about probiotics has become a roar but despite great promises, probiotics work is limited to gut. Periodontal works are sparse and need validation by large randomized trials. It can be said probiotics are still in “infancy” in terms of periodontal health benefits, but surely have opened door for a new paradigm of treating disease on a nano molecular mode. Novel species are likely to be added in the future as research data accumulate. In-depth understanding of the intrinsic microbial ecological control of commensal microbiota may introduce new putative species to this discussion.

Oral Probiotics on the Horizon: A Review

For the past few decades, bacteria known as probiotics have been added to food because of their beneficial effects on human health. Probiotics are a part of our daily food consumed as fermented foods with specially added active live cultures; such as in yogurt or as dietary supplements. Probiotics act by competing with pathogenic microorganisms for adhesion sites, antagonising these pathogens or by modulating the host’s immune response. The potential application of probiotics for oral health has gradually garnered the attention of several teams of researchers. Although only a few clinical studies have been conducted so far, the results to date suggest that probiotics could be useful in the prevention and treatment of oral infections, including dental caries, periodontal disease and halitosis. Probiotics are live microorganisms when consumed in suitable quantity, avails the host with desired health benefits. Previously, Probiotics and their entire health benefits were limited to gastrointestinal tract infection. However, mounting interest in the field of probiotics lets investigators explore the clinical benefit of probiotics in oral ailments and reveal the indication that probiotics could be a novel natural therapy over the existing allopathic practice. Microbiota present within the oral fissure offers an outstanding opportunity and maybe the world of interest for researchers, scientists and the pharmaceutical sector for a more clinical trial. Several in-vitro studies and clinical evidence have supported and justified the inherent role of probiotics in the control of oral ailments. Further studies incorporating safety aspects of an individual or combination of strain may be conducted to establish and formulate a suitable probiotic delivery system for oral application. This review furnishes the most recent scientific evidence on oral probiotics for a more robust understanding regarding the prospects of probiotics in oral ailments.

We always thoughts that bacteria are something which are harmful to our health and that are main etiological factors that cause disease. But our full body contains lots of bacteria, probiotic are the „‟good‟‟ or „‟helpful‟‟ bacteria because they help to keep your gut healthy. The purpose of this paper is to review the current credentials on the concept and the possible beneficial properties of probiotic bacteria in the literature, focusing on those available in food.

Probiotics - A New Horizon in Prevention of Oral Disease

Probiotics are live microbial feed supplement that beneficially affects the host by improving its intestinal microbial balance. Possible mechanisms of action of probiotics in human body are normalisation of the microbiota, modulation of the immune response and metabolic effects. Probiotic bacteria guard the oral health by competing with the oral pathogens for nutrients, growth factors and site of adhesion. Most commonly used oral probiotic strains are lactobacilli and Bifidobacterium. Lozenges, chewing gums, dairy foods are considered useful vehicles for probiotic bacteria. Hence, the aim of this comprehensive review is to present an update about the current status of probiotics in terms of its application in oral health.

The term 'probiotic', which means 'for life', is used when referring to bacteria associated with beneficial effects on a human being, and by definition, probiotics are live microbes which, when administered in an adequate amount, confer health benefits to its host. The present review focuses on potential applications of numerous formulations incorporated with novel probiotic strains. Mainly, Lactobacilli and Bifidobacterium strains are leading in the management of various dental diseases. Although in recent times much focus has been given to understand the role of probiotics and their mechanism inside the gut, till date, only limited studies have been carried out to know the exact role and viability of probiotics in oral health formulations (tooth powder and/or paste) conferring oral health benefits. Hence, this area of research should be explored for managing several oral infections through potential probiotics. Further, incorporating the selected potential probiotics with a suitable carrier in the form of toothpaste/ powder may be formulated and validated for oral health care in appropriate animal models and/or human subjects. All of these issues have been discussed in this review article with various strategies involved in the management of oral health through novel probiotics.

Intense research in the field of probiotics persistently reveals novel benefits derived from these microorganisms. Probiotics have been consumed directly or indirectly through various food forms ascertaining to their wide gamut of healthy effects on humans. For the initial semi centennial, the primary role of probiotics was considered for maintaining gut health by preventing or treating infections, modulating host immune response and enhancing vitamin secretion etc. The potential benefits anticipated, arising out of the application of probiotics in the field of oral health has lately attracted the attention of researchers across the globe. Recent studies including clinical trials strongly suggest the active role of probiotics in prevention and treatment of oral infections, including dental caries and other periodontal disease. Probiotics have a unique ability to create a biofilm, which acts as protective lining and helps in replacing any biofilm-growing pathogen. This article summarizes the currently available data on the potential benefits of probiotics in maintaining oral health.

Each day, every human being ingests a large number of living microorganisms, predominantly bacteria. Although these organisms are naturally present in food and water, they can also be deliberately added during the processing of foods such as sausages, cheese, yogurt and fermented milk products. For several decades now, bacteria called probiotics have been added to some foods because of their beneficial effects for human health. Although only a few clinical studies have been conducted so far, the results to date suggest that probiotics could be useful in preventing and treating oral infections, including dental caries, periodontal disease and halitosis. This article summarizes the currently available data on the potential benefits of probiotics for general and oral health.

Probiotics are non-pathogenic living microbes used to treat several medical conditions. They have been added in a few food products due to their favourable results on human health. The mechanism of action of probiotics is associated with their capacity to cope with pathogenic microorganisms for adhesion sites, to antagonize these pathogens or to regulate the host’s immune response. Probiotics might be helpful in intercepting and treating oral infections, including dental caries, periodontal disease and halitosis. Probiotics contribute to a healthy microbial balance by interacting with oral micro biome which impacts the general health, being a significant contributor to oral health. Probiotics in oral health – A new tool in pharmaceutical science

Probiotics are dietary supplements containing potentially beneficial bacteria or yeasts. They are administered in different quantities that allow for colon colonization. These products help in stimulating health by promoting flora and also suppressing the pathologic colonization and disease spread. Initially, probiotics were used for the management of intestinal tract problems. But, nowadays its use has been proved in strengthening the immune system to combat allergies, stress, exposure to toxic substances and other diseases. There are few studies that reported anticariogenic effects of probiotics and their use in the treatment of periodontal disease and halitosis. However, data is still sparse on the action and role of probiotics in the oral cavity. More information is needed on the colonization of probiotics in the mouth and their possible effect on and within oral biofilm. The present review tries to briefly outline the potential role of probiotics in improving oral and dental health.

Probiotics are been widely used these days in diseases of the gut to combat the effect of medications and to provide a better beneficial microflora for the Gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The use of probiotics in maintaining an oral health has been widely discussed as the beneficial bacterial could replace the cariogenic and other bacterial which affect the oral health and prove a boon for oral health. The main strains used in GIT include Lactobacillus Species which are known to produce acids and can cause a reciprocal effect on the oral cavity. So everything which seems good is not a boon it might also have some ill effects which can be misery full and prove bane. This review demonstrates the action of Probiotics on oral health and disease with both beneficial and harmful effects.

Probiotics are micro-organisms, principally bacteria, which, when ingested, confer health benefits beyond basic nutrition. Probiotics have been extensively studied for their health promoting effects. The main feld of research has been focussed on the gastro-intestinal tract. However, in the past few years probiotics have also been investigated from an oral health perspective and their use has shown promising results with respect to control of chronic conditions, such as dental caries, periodontitis, halitosis and candidial infections. Despite the immense potential of probiotics, hardly any randomised, controlled trials have been conducted on their action and application and studies on their effects on oral health are still in early stages. Hence, more research is needed before any evidence-based conclusions can be drawn. This paper considers some recent literature and insights on which further investigations could be based.
