Content based image retrieval (CBIR) considers the characteristics of the image itself, for example its shapes, colors and textures. CBIR has many applications areas such as, education, commerce, military, searching, bio medicine and web image classification. The domain of CBIR is expanding day by day, the requirements have become complex and so are the algorithms. CBIR is a new but widely adopted method for finding images from vast and unannotated image databases. In CBIR images are indexed on the basis of low-level features, such as color, texture, and shape that can automatically be derived from the visual content of the images. Extensive use of images in various applications gives immense importance to Content based image retrieval. There are many ways to retrieve image from image database depending upon various image features like DCT coefficients, mean, median entropy etc. Histogram [6] is very simple and old approach for image retrieval. This paper describes a combined approach to content based image retrieval considering DCT- coefficients of R,G,B planes separately and basic image features. In the most recent couple of years, the multifaceted nature of media content, especially the images, has developed exponentially, and on day by day basis, more than millions of images are uploaded at different archives such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. To search for are a relevant image from an archive is a challenging research problem for the computer vision research community. In a content-based image retrieval system (CBIR), the basic problem lies in extracting the image featured that completely describes the content of the image in the database. Extracting such a kind of image needs the complete assessment of the retrieval performance of image features. This paper displays the structural aspects of the CBIR which involves the extraction of features concerning color and texture. Normally utilized shading highlights including chroma minutes, chroma histogram and chroma correlogram are thought about. The purpose of this Paper is to describe our research on different feature extraction and matching techniques in designing a Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system. Due to the enormous increase in image database sizes, as well as its vast deployment in various applications, the need for CBIR development arose. Firstly, this paper outlines a description of the primitive feature extraction techniques like: texture, colour, and shape. Once these features are extracted and used as the basis for a similarity check between images, the various matching techniques are discussed. Furthermore, the results of its performance are illustrated by a detailed example.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are used for content based image retrieval (CBIR). Training of a neural network requires that the user specifies the network structure and sets the learning parameters. In this study, the optimum design of ANN's for retrieval of images is investigated. We use test image datasets in a series of experiments that evaluate the effects on network performance (measured in terms of the Mean Square Error and number of iteration (time required for training)) of different choices of network size and structure, network parameters, training samples size. We use a test image database of 1000 images including 10 classes. Each class has 100 images. The backpropagation algorithm, also called the generalized delta rule, was used for neural network training. An activation function was hyperbolic tangent. Experiments show that with used category of images optimal number of neurons in hidden layer is half of number of images in used training set. We intend to design small CBIR system for educational purposes and potentially for mobility environment.

CBIR is very useful in several applications such as medical imaging, modern diagnosis, remote sensing and satellite imaging. The different types of images are subjected to set of operations used as constituent stages of CBIR. The method was initially used in 1990s and it is an image retrieval method using image vision contents such as color, texture, shape, spatial relationship, not using image notation to search images.Satellite imagery has become an important part of our information source. The amount of high resolution satellite imagery is growing rapidly, and much of it is now available to the public through various map services, such as Google Maps, etc.

Due to the exponential growth of image data there is a dire need for innovative tools which can easily manage, retrieve images and images from the large image database. The most common approach which is being used is Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system. CBIR is the popular image retrieval system by which reterived the targetted image can be retrieved by matching the features of the given image. The goal of this paper is to develop an image retrieval based on content properties such as shape, color, texture etc. usually encoded into feature vectors. One of the main advantages of the CBIR approach is the possibility of an automatic retrieval process instead of the traditional keyword-based approach. The CBIR technology has been used in several applications such as fingerprint identification, biodiversity information systems, digital libraries, medicine and historical research among others. A content-based image retrieval system where an active learning strategy is used to gain relevance feedback (RF) is described. In this way retrieving process may be highly accelerated without significant degradation of accuracy Searching procedure was performed through the two basic steps: an objective one, based on the Euclidean distances and a subjective one based on the user's relevance feedback. Images recognized from user as the best matched to a query are labeled and used for updating the query feature vector through a RBF (radial basis function) neural network. In this process user change feature vector which became more refined and appropriate for future search. In practice, several iterative steps are sufficient, as confirmed by intensive simulations.
