Agile Methodologies

In this study we were able to gather a substantial quantity of detailed responses from a group of individuals and companies that are broadly quite similar to those found in several of the major world centers of technological innovation. As such, our analysis of the results provides some tantalizing hints to organizational and methodological challenges and practices of a broad range of groups. One intriguing suggestion is that while "traditional" and well defined Agile groups function according to the standards established to support those approaches, Quasi-Agile groups do not. Instead, Quasi-Agile groups seem to pursue the goals of Agile using measures and underlying approaches more similar to traditional methods. One might expect that such a discordance to affect the effectiveness of a group's efforts.

"Agile"-denotes the quality of being agile. This paper deals with the concept of agile methodology. It will include some of the software development process models used. In particular the aim of the agile process is to satisfy the customer through early and continuous delivery of valuable software. This paper compares the agile processes with other software development life cycle models. Advantages and disadvantages of the agile processes are also included in this paper.

Agile Methods (AMs) are a set of development techniques designed to address some problems of modern software development (ie, projects over budget and over schedule). This study defines the systems development methodologies named agile methods and investigates the environmental conditions where agile methods are most suitable. A definition of agile methods was developed using an analytical comparative framework to investigate five of the earliest published agile methods; Dynamic Systems Development Method, Extreme Programming, Scrum, Adaptive Software Development,and Crystal Methods. The framework decomposed each method into its component parts; philosophy, models, techniques, tools, scope, outputs, practice, and the extent towhich the method may be adapted to a situation. Agile development principles have been shown to work only for small-sized software projects. When software projects, especially those that have a distributed element, are scaled up, agile manifesto-based principles may not lead to agility in development. Further, agile manifesto-based principles do not seem to have strong theoretical support in general. This paper distinguishes "agility principles" from "agile principles" and attempts to provide best practice recommendations that are based on theories popular in Information Systems, and reference-discipline fields.

Several iterative and incremental methods exist to control projects, but currently agile technologies are increasing admirably. Agile Project Management provides an approach that offers not only agility, but retains the concepts of a project, project delivery and project management. This study will explore the agile methodologies focusing on three popular methodologies, such as extreme programming, scrum and rational unified process. Comparisons among these three methodologies and finally discussion on the findings of these comparisons and future direction will be explored.

Abstract. Agile methodologies have recently been widely gaining ground worldwide. We assumed another situation in the Czech Republic. In 2005 only few researches about the use of agile methodologies have been presented, which have not been evidently focused on the Czech environment. Therefore we decided to conduct our own survey. The research objective was to determine the rate of agile approaches usage and practical experience with these approaches in companies in the Czech Republic.
