Abstract

Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) is a prob lem of computationally determining which “sense” of a word is activated by the use of the word in pa rticular context. To figure out the appropriate mea nings of polysemous nouns in the given context Genetic Algor ithm is used. This is crucial for various applicati ons like ‘machine translation’, ‘speech processes’ and ‘info rmation retrieval’ etc. while the work on WSD for E nglish is voluminous, to our knowledge, and this is the fi rst attempt of using Genetic Algorithm for Hindi la nguage. Wordnet for Hindi developed at IIT Bombay, a lexica l knowledge base for Hindi, is used. The main focus is on removing the ambiguity of the sense using the co ntext by applying Genetic Algorithm. Key Terms: Ambiguity; Genetic Algorithm; Hindi Wo rdnet; Sense Disambiguation; Seed; Word Sense Disambiguation
