Abstract
IMS has been widely recognized as the control and signaling framework for delivering of the rich communication & multimedia services to broadband users. Amongst others, it’s deploying as the service (middleware) platform for interactive and personalized IPTV services. The goal of this paper is to provide a short description and analysis of the (IPTV) use cases that have been selected for design and implementation at Hanoi University of Technology (HUT) in scope of its initiatives for NGN researching program. Major use cases, or we called intelligent features, are the advanced electronic service guide, video on demand (VoD), (IPTV) session continuity, and parental control. Development results for each of the use case are depicted.

IP video has taken two forms: Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), which emulates broadcast Television (TV), and Internet video where video selections are accessed across the Internet through Web sites such as YouTube, Hulu, Netflix and others. IPTV and Internet video each provide capabilities that will drive new TV experience. As more and more TV content migrates to the Internet, "personal" video choices are becoming the norm, not the exception, for IPTV as well as Internet video. Beyond today's established IPTV, transformations in how media are managed and delivered promise a world of personalized content and services delivered to "any device, anytime, anywhere." This paper describes the co-evolution of IPTV and Internet video. It gives a tutorial-level overview describing how IPTV content is managed and delivered today. Then it discusses the impacts on the IPTV architecture and media value chain from transformations in IPTV that are enhanced by Internet and Web capabilities.

As the IMS provides session establishment, QoS parameter negotiation, authentication and accounting it is an overlay architecture well qualified for session signaling concerning IPTV scenarios. The management of the signaling can be integrated as an application into an IPTV Application Server. The IPTV AS is further responsible for all necessary media signaling towards a proper IPTV media server. Such a media server is similar to the ordinary media server known from the voice centric IMS but additionally provides unicast, multicast and broadcast delivery of TV content which is placed by content providers. The media signaling requires a dedicated session description and can be provided by SIP or RTSP. The signaling between user and media server is orchestrated by a service-oriented-archietctue with a session manager acting as middleware. This middleware also provides interfaces for web services triggering IPTV session establishment via Parlay X gateway. This paper proposes a general IMS-based framework for delivering Live TV services over several access networks and presents the corresponding signaling flows for content enquiring and content switching as well as related delays. It furter presents an approach for using SIP and RTSP in cooperation for realizing VOD scenarios.

As distributed systems scale up and are deployed into increasingly sensitive settings, demand is rising for a new generation of communications middleware in support of application-level computing. Thus, knowledge of distributed systems and communications middleware has become essential in today's computing environment. Additionally, multimedia distributed systems are confronting a wide range of challenges associated with limits of the prevailing service oriented architectures and platforms. In this position paper, authors seek that the future of multimedia distributed systems will pass through new techniques to stream data at high rates to groups of recipients, e.g., collaboration systems, computer gaming, embedded control systems and other media delivery systems. In order to be more specific with promising applications for the future of multimedia distributed systems, authors have selected a hot topic like Internet Protocol Television (IPTV). Authors present Tele-ed IPTV, i.e., an author's tool they have developed to distribute multimedia content to TV sets. This position paper argues that future of multimedia distributed systems will pass through IPTV frameworks which interconnect systems that previously have been relatively incompatible.

IP multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is one the most promising architectures for IP Television (IPTV). It proposes a common control plane achieving a certain service convergence and guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS). The QoS issue is a major research challenge in NextTV4all, an ambitious project of the competitive pole Images&Réseaux in France that proposes a package of innovative services enriching audiovisual experience on both fixed and mobile devices over an IMS IPTV architecture as specified in standardization bodies such as ETSI TISPAN and 3GPP. In this paper, we present the main results of the project and describe the different activities that have been conducted from the service specification to the demonstrator development. Six innovative services are deployed such as the incoming call management and the chat room service that will be explained in detail in this paper. The paper ends with an outline of the QoS management in the IMS core and within the transport block.

The evolving Interactive M ultimedia (IM M) services require the development of exible and easily adaptable design tools that can interoperate with the underlyin g broadban d communication network. In this paper, we adopt a design philosophy based on the Intelligen t Network (IN) concept. The main advantage of this approach is the transparency of the service-speci® c features to the underlying signaling system. Hence, a fast introduction of demanding services becomes possible even if the signaling of the network i s not sophisticated enough to fully cover the requiremen ts of IM M services. The standard International Telecommun ication Union (ITU) Service Independent Block (SIB)-based methodology is used as a basis and further extended, where necessary, to cover new requirements, not originally predicted for Narrowban d-Integrate d Services Digital Network (N-ISDN), but arising from IM M services. The paper further proceeds with the development of an Interactive Multimed ia O bject Class Library (IM OCL) which adopts a high-level object-oriented approach that supports an easy evolution of IN-based service design towards implementation. The IMOCL is kept generic to the most possible extent aiming to provide a common framework for the design of a wide variety of IM M services using the IN concept. The IMOCL encompasses service managemen t functionality enabling the designer and provider of an IN service to manage the newly introduced service. Both ITU SIB-based and IM OCL methodologies, together with the standard Speci® cation and Descriptio n Language (SDL) technique are demonstrated in the design of selected parts of a typical Video on Demand (VoD) service.

Digital TV Systems open a new world of possibilities. Since December 2007 the Brazilian people has been experiencing this new technology. Among the most promising applications are the ones that enable TV-Sets to work as the central processing unit of a house. This paper presents the most recent strategies to implement convergence models between Digital TV Systems and Residential Gateway Platforms. The first goal of this paper is showing how the already proposed models implement convergent scenarios between the two involved worlds: at one side the function-oriented MHP (Multimedia Home Platform) middleware, a set of standardized Java APIs for Digital TV and, at the Home Networks side, the services-oriented OSGi (Open Services Gateway Initiative) framework. Our final goal is to identify the most relevant features for our country in order to propose a new collaboration model supported by OSGi and the Brazilian declarative reference middleware (Ginga-NCL). This model is validated on a convergent scenario Ginga-NCL-OSGi.

Abstract This dissertation presents an IP Television (IPTV) service architecture that applies the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for session and media control, while incorporating a design suitable for deployment in the context of an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architectural framework. The main features of the architecture include flexible delivery of personalized multimedia streams, adaptability to the characteristics of the networking infrastructures and channels used for transmission, and a modular design to facilitate implementation of new functionalities and services. In order to maximize the end users Quality Of Experience (QoE) independently of the access medium used, a Quality Of Service (QoS) adaptation method is proposed allowing dynamic realtime updates of session attributes. The developed solution is specifically designed for live multimedia streaming, such as broadcasted events, independently of the cast mode (unicast or multicast). Private Video Recorder (PVR) functions and Video On Demand (VoD) services are supported, their control is assured by standard SIP messages. This dissertation is focused on the development of an IPTV Application Server (AS), that interacts with an IPTV Client developed under the same research project. The functionalities and scalability of the AS were tested on a live wireless 3G Code Division Multiple Access 2000 (CDMA2000)
