Health Problems with the Use of Information Technologies

The aim of our work was to study the physical symptoms of upper- and lower-level white-collar workers using a questionnaire. The study was cross-sectional with a questionnaire posted to 15 000 working-age persons. The responses (6121) included 970 upper- and 1150 lower-level white-collar workers. In the upper- and lower-level white-collar worker groups, 45.7 and 56.0%, respectively, had experienced pain, numbness and aches in the neck either pretty often or more frequently. When comparing daily computer users and nonusers, there were significant differences in pain, numbness and aches in the neck or in the shoulders. In addition, age and gender influenced some physical symptoms. In the future, it is essential to take into account that working with computers can be especially associated with physical symptoms in the neck and in the shoulders when workers use computers daily.

Computers are an integral part of the work environment and it is important to identify and establish safe work practices and procedures that ensure hazards associated with computer use Hence, The Aim of the present study to evaluate the effect of health prevention program for Occupational Overuse Syndrome for computer users. Design: Quasi-experimental study design was utilized in the current study. Setting: the study was carried out in Computer Science Center in El-fyoum University. Sample: A purposive sample of 400 computer users, who are using computer continuously for 6 hours and more per day were selected. Tools: Three tools were developed by the researcher for data collection. Tool (I) Structured Interviewing questionnaire, included three parts: Part (a):-Socio-demographic characteristics computer users. (b) Assess users, knowledge. (c) Assess physical health of computer users & musculoskeletal complaints. Tool (II) Observation checklist of Computer users practice. Tool (III) Observational checklist to assess work place environments among computer users. Results: The main finding of the present study revealed that 24% of computer users have complete knowledge before programs while improved to 80% after application the program. As for computer users practice. Only 15% of computer user's were scored as good practice before applying program. Their practices which improved to be 85% after applying the program with significantly. P.≤0.001 and 46.9% of them complain severe eye complication improved to 15.7% after program, 684% of them complain upper musculoskeletal complaints before program improved 1718 to 21% after program. Significant statistics improvements were detected. As regards all items related to work place environment a statistical significant improvement were detected after applying program P.≤0.001. Conclusion: The study concluded that applying of the preventive program led to significant statistics improvement in the computer users regarding their knowledge, practices and work place environments to prevent overuse syndrome among computer users.The study recommended a training program is one of the key health and safety issues of the modern information technology era to overcome the phenomenon of OOS and other health problems related to this types of work. Further researches are needed to detect the other problems to early management.

Computer operators are at high risk to developing health disorders, related to prolonged use of computer. We assessed the occupational risk factors for computer-related health disorders and evaluated health conditions of the operators in south-south region of Nigeria. For the purpose of this study, the following areas were considered, the concept of health hazard, types of health hazards in line with computer operators, which includes; physical/mechanical hazard, chemical, biological, psychosocial hazard and ergonomic hazard. Other areas are the concept of computer operators and their workstation, common health complaints of computer operators, health hazard of computer operators and their effects, risk factors of health of computer operators, awareness of health of computer operators. Control measures for health hazards and recommendations were subsequently elaborated in other to enhance a healthy wellbeing among the computer operators. It is also pertinent on other researchers to proffer other effective preventive measures necessary to improve computer operators' health status.

Computer misuse leads to computer-related injuries. The incidence of computer-related injuries (CRIs) is reported having a high incidence among office personnel who works routinely with the computer. The purpose of this research is to figure out the incidence of computer-related injuries in an organization with a majority of employees using technology such as a computer. This research is a survey of 120 office personnel selected with a simple random sampling method. The data was collected by distributing a self-administered questionnaire. The results showed that the office personnel experienced computer-related injuries such as computer vision syndrome (eye strain, blurred vision, watery eyes, and headache) and musculoskeletal disorders such as neck pain, shoulder and, waist pain. A survey was conducted in Hisar district of Haryana state to find out the musculoskeletal problems of computer users and the preventive measures adopted by the users.The sample comprised of 200 computer users ranging from 25-40 years of age, using computer at least for the last one year and for a minimum of 4-6 hours daily. Working profile of the respondents revealed that on an average, 6-8 hours daily were spent by private computer users whereas it were 4-6 hours by public computer users. Maximum of the respondents were doing data entry as main work on the computer. Workstation use highlighted that more than half of respondents (54%) were using the specially designed tables while nearly one- third (32.0%) were using specially designed chairs. Computer has become one of the most important tools in human life, in-fact it has become an integral part of human life, because of its relevance in learning, communication and information, multimedia, business and entertainments. Despite all its advantages it has posed some negative effects on humanity. This paper shows the survey conducted to actually unveil some possible effects that users of computer encountered, and the result analysis has shown a great significance in educational research and the study.

Background A prospective study of computer users was performed to determine the occurrence of and evaluate risk factors for neck or shoulder (N/S) and hand or arm (H/A) musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS) and disorders (MSD). Methods Individuals (n 632) newly hired into jobs requiring ! 15 hr/week of computer use were followed for up to 3 years. At study entry, workstation dimensions and worker postures were measured and medical and psychosocial risk factors were assessed. Daily diaries were used to document work practices and incident MSS. Those reporting MSS were examined for speci®c MSD. Incidence rates of MSS and MSD were estimated with survival analysis. Cox regression models were used to evaluate associations between participant characteristics at entry and MSS and MSD.

The proliferation of video display terminals (VDT) in the modern office setting of banks has generated concern related to potential health hazards associated with their use. Musculoskeletal pain and visual discomfort are the main health problems reported by computers and the major contributors to workdays lost. Prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among keyboard users has been reported to be as high as 81%. In the computing environment, incorrect computer workstation set up, prolonged work in fixed or awkward positions, seated and static work, and overuse have been identified as MSD risk factors.
