A great deal of human history is the history of empires. This course examines historical and contemporary empires within a comparative context wider than modern European imperialism. With a regional focus on Eurasia, the class explores key aspects of empire building: military expansion, indirect rule, unequal exchange, environmental impact, ideological hegemony, colonial policies, and ruling strategies towards heterogeneous regions, religions, races, and ethnic groups. Though most empires perished in the twentieth century, we will discuss how, where, and why their political, economic, and cultural legacies persist in the post-colonial period. This course also proposes empire as an important lens for understanding contemporary global powers-which inherit, incorporate, and invent imperial institutions, identities, and strategies. Empire is not a historical relic; it is alive somewhere or about to revive elsewhere. Throughout the course, we will track three contemporary powers that still exert enormous influence on global politics, security, and economy: America, Russia, and China. By revealing the logic behind their decisions and behaviors, and by situating them in comparison to their precedents, counterparts, or competitors-Britain, Japan, and Rome-this course offers students the analytic tools to engage in pressing debates in domestic and international politics. "What’s the Big Picture? Comparative Perspectives on the Archaeology of Empire Bradley J. Parker (University of Utah) The stated goal of this symposium is “to investigate imperial repertoires of rule and how they affected peripheral societies and landscapes” in an effort “to create a comparative perspective on the archaeology of empires.” To address this lofty goal, this paper takes two important steps. First, instead of detailing the specifics of a particular case study, I step back and view the overarching features that characterize the complex polity we call “empire.” To do so I employ a number of classifications proposed by prominent anthropological archaeologists working in both the old and new worlds. Second, using the Neo-Assyrian Empire as a particularly vivid example of how specific features of empire operated in practice, I systematically compare and contrast Assyria with two similarly complex polities in the New World. Utilizing settlement patterns, patterns of production, the presence of networks, material culture, the exploitation of diversity, and the creation of power differentials as categories of investigation, I search for common and unique themes by juxtaposing the Neo-Assyrian Empire of the Old World with the Inca and Wari empires of the New World. The goal of this paper is not to answer the proverbial question “What is empire?” but instead to bring cross-disciplinary and interregional comparison into the debate about the archaeology of empire. From Households to Empires: Papers in Honor of Bradley J. Parker, 2023

This volume contains a collection of essays in honor of Bradley J. Parker, who unexpectedly passed away at the height of his career. Professor Parker made numerous contributions to the field of archaeology on a broad array of topics spanning six millennia of archaeological history in both ancient Mesopotamia and the Andes. These essays by his friends, colleagues, and former students cover three broad themes: household archaeology, frontiers and borderlands, and the archaeology of empire. Dr. Edwards’s essay, “Imperial Dynamics” serves as the introductory chapter to the section of the book devoted to the archaeology of empires and outlines Professor Parker’s theoretical and methodological contributions to the study of these large and complex political formations in the past. The essay also contextualizes the subsequent chapters within this broader framework.

Centralized Power, Centralized Authority? Ideological Claims and Archaeological Patterns

Elite claims of power and authority may take material expression in both the archaeological and historical records. Such claims may be expressed through the renovation, rebuilding, realignment, or construction of monumental architecture; the appropriation of symbols of power and authoriry; or may be made outright in verbal and written media. The South Indian empire of Vijayanagara (c. A.D. 1300-1600) laid claim to a vast portion of the Indian subcontinent, but scholars agree neither on the nature nor the extent of power exercised by the imperial center. In this paper, we examine the ideological claims of the Vijayanagara political elite, as they are materially expressed. Specifically, we differentiate the forms and spatial extent of centralized power and centralized authoriry in the imperial "core" versus several "peripheral" regions through the distribution and form of fortifications and temples and through a quantitative spatial analysis of inscriptions. Such claims can be related to material conditions only in the "core" region; relationships between ideological claims and archaeological patterns in that area suggest avenues for future archaeological research in complex societies. This graduate seminar is an anthropological exploration of empire both as an analytic category and a historical phenomenon. It introduces students to various theoretical and methodological approaches to historical and contemporary imperial formations within the discipline of anthropology and to a lesser degree in history. In this course, we will first discuss anthropology's historical entanglements with empire as the discipline that studies the non-European Others. Then we will read from anthropologists who have criticized this epistemological legacy and incorporated the study of imperialism and empire in their research agenda since the second half of the twentieth century. By looking at cases from Africa, America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, this course explores key concepts and major debates such as race, settler colonialism, displacement, diaspora, security, militarism, sexuality, and disability. Students will emerge from this course with an in-depth understanding of anthropological approaches to empire, methodologies ranging from archival research to ethnography, and the analytical limits and possibilities of empire in making sense of our contemporary world. Course requirements Attendance and participation (%10) This course is a discussion-based seminar, which means it relies strongly on your active participation. We will work through the course material together through close readings, group exercises, and class discussion. For this, you need to come to class prepared. Weekly questions (%15) You will submit 3-5 questions related to the readings for the 6 weeks that you will choose. Empires reconsidered: current archaeological approaches

The ancient empires are frequently examined through the lenses of theoretical models, which both provide conceptual frameworks and pose series of questions that permit cross-cultural comparisons. This paper summarizes the salient features of some of the more influential models that have been applied to archaeological inquiry over the last several decades, including the coreperiphery, world systems, territorial-hegemonic, and IEMP approaches. It then examines the shifts in theoretical orientation that have arisen since the emergence of post-colonial, experiential, and materiality theory, along with the selective infusion of philosophical questions about existence, vitality, and space-time. It further explores how advances in technical analytical capacities, for example through GIS and bioarchaeology, have created hitherto unavailable data sets that are reframing the kinds of theoretical questions raised in the investigation of ancient empires.

ANAR 184 Syllabus: Empires in Archaeological Perspective

Archaeological evidence for selected empires of the Old World and New World will be used to illuminate cross-cultural similarities and differences in the strategies complex pre-modern societies used to expand into empires. We will discuss the ways in which such societies produced, acquired, accumulated, and distributed wealth. There will be a focus on the expansion of early empires, on their interactions with peripheral polities, and on the imperial strategies of expanding empires in dealing with the capture and consolidation of new territories.
