Education in Energy Engineering Based on Industry Needs

Energy engineering is facing new challenges in educating experts in sustainable energy. The aim of this paper is to characterise expertise related to sustainability in higher education. Future challenges and required skills are explored through recent studies, which have listed key competencies that engineers need in their working life. Sustainability and expertise are discussed on the basis of literature and energy curricula are explored on universities’ internet pages.

Dr. Evans has over 20 years of executive and senior technical management experience at 3M Company and IBM Corporation, primarily leading multidisciplinary, global technical organizations responsible for R&D; new business and market development; manufacturing engineering; quality; environmental, health and safety; and others. Before joining National University, he acquired 12+ years of voluntary involvement with higher education, including adjunct teaching and research in engineering at the University of Colorado and formal advisory involvement in both science and engineering at the University of Texas. Other past professional and academic activities include being a founding member and officer in the Central Texas Electronics Association; past chairman of IBM's Materials Shared University Research Committee; Ph.D. Recruiting Coordinator for IBM's Systems Technology Division; and executive sponsor for 3M division's student programs. He has published and presented widely in areas of surface science, electronic materials and processes, project management, and industry/university relations. He holds 4 patents and has received awards for excellence in technical innovation (IBM), technical authorship (IBM), teaching (University of Colorado), and scholarship (National Science Foundation). Shekar Viswanathan, National University Dr. Viswanathan is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Applied Engineering and Lead Faculty for Engineering Management and Homeland Security and Safety Engineering. He is the Lead for six full time and fifty two adjunct faculty members. His department offers three undergraduate and six graduate programs and has a student population of three hundred students. Dr. Viswanathan is an educator, researcher and administrator with more than twenty-five years of industrial and academic experience encompassing engineering and environmental consulting, research and development, and technology development. His career experience includes teaching at the University level, conducting fundamental research, and developing continuing educational courses.

Sustainability

What do engineering students in 2020 need to know about energy to be successful in the workplace and contribute to addressing society’s issues related to energy? Beginning with this question, we have designed a new course for second-year engineering students. Drawing on the interdisciplinary backgrounds of our diverse team of engineering instructors, we aimed to provide an introduction to energy for all engineering students that challenged the dominant discourse in engineering by valuing students’ lived experiences and bringing in examples situated in different cultural contexts. An Integrated Approach to Energy was offered for the first time in Spring 2020 for 18 students. In this paper, we describe the design of the course including learning objectives, content, and pedagogical approach. Economic Development Board Leslie Wilkins has served as the Vice President of the Maui Economic Development Board since 1999. She was hired to design, launch and direct the Women in Technology Project with a mission to engage girls/women and under represented populations into the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) pipeline. In its tenth year, the program serves annually more than 14,000 students, educators and industry members throughout the state of Hawaii from elementary school to job placement.

Sustainability

Engineering graduates must be prepared to support our world’s need for a clean and sustainable energy future. Complex problems related to energy and sustainability require engineers to consider the broad spectrum of interrelated consequences including human and environmental health, sociopolitical, and economic factors. Teaching engineering students about energy within a societal context, simultaneous with developing technical knowledge and skills, will better prepare them to solve real-world problems. Yet few energy courses that approach energy topics from a human-centered perspective exist within engineering programs. The technological development needs engineers, who are oriented towards a global market, have the ability to be involved in interdisciplinary professional and intercultural teams, and who possess lifelong learning competencies. This gives a need for new educational programs which provides engineering graduates with new types of process-oriented, market-oriented and global competencies. The paper presents an environmental high education program: environmental engineering organized at Technical University of Iasi that permit to the environmental engineering students to gain competencies in the field of energy or energetic aspects of different technologies and the environment. The course and laboratory classes together with the self or team work including documentation about the different ways to produce and get energy, the main structure of an energy system, the aspects of production, transportation and consummation of useful energy (electrical and thermal energy) from conventional and renewable energy resources, technical analysis of fuels etc. permit to the environmental engineering students to understand the importance of energy field into life and economical activities, and also the impact of different energy forms on environment (air, water, soil and subsoil etc.). The principal measures and actions to control, prevent and reduce the pollutant effects of different energetic activities on environment are also presented into the course, seminars and laboratory classes.

This paper analyzes the case study of an interdisciplinary course in Energy Economy that was developed at the Energy Engineering Graduate Program at Başkent University. The course integrated several unique pedagogical features to satisfy the aim of developing a working knowledge in energy economy with an energy systems perspective. The novel aspects of the course thematically led to a capstone research project where 5 teams of 17 course participants analyzed their prioritized solutions towards improving the energy self-sufficiency of the campus based on the practice of energy economy. The results of the teams' solutions towards a net-zero energy/exergy campus included electric buses for city-campus transport, poly-generation for the new Arts Center, LED/OLED lighting for campus lighting, dynamo driven/piezoelectric sports center, biofuels from the university-owned dairy products farm, and an energy efficient technology incubation center. This unique course with participatory learning is compared with others before concluding that the case study is a useful international example for energy economy.

is a professor of chemical engineering at Bucknell University. She earned her B.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University, and her M.S. and Ph.D., also in chemical engineering, from the University of Virginia. Her primary research focus is on engineering pedagogy at the undergraduate level. She is particularly interested in the teaching and learning of concepts related to thermodynamics. She is also interested in active, collaborative, and problem-based learning, and in the ways hands-on activities such as making, technology, and games can be used to improve student engagement.
