The university as a knowledge-intense space-also referred to as the brain of the city-is one of the key urban factors whose role is gradually being repositioned in the city and society during its social and urban transformation. New concepts of cities have entered professional discourses, and six categories were found to be conceptually distinct enough to be seen as supported by a specific body of theories. The research goal for this study is to define three of these-the sustainable city, smart city and resilient city-and the evolving university-city co-influencing relationship. The main methods used for this study are the analytical and descriptive methods, and the research materials are drawn from wide-ranging literature, such as books, research articles, published analyses, reports, urban plans, and other documents. Over the last 50 years, the undergraduate program in civil engineering has moved towards a formation devoted to the technological and economic aspects, moving away from humanistic; on the contrary, in the architecture and urban planning program there has been a movement in the opposite direction, combined with the development of beaux-arts topics. Both lost their systemic visions, contrary to the requirements of the society. As one of the possible actions trying to stop this, and based on a similar experiment undertaken in Europe, a program of double qualification was created in 2004, with a multidisciplinary and integrating view. Kosovo after the 1999 conflict was in a social, economic and environmental disadvantage. Buildings having educational features (besides trade, culture, sport and recreation) are the most desirable neighbourhood in the area of housing. If they are not at a reasonable distance, local communities demand to build the appropriate buildings. If there is an educational building and it is too small, locals try to upgrade the environment. The authorities are trying to solve the problem of appropriate location of educational infrastructure because of its great importance and public interest. They do this despite the high cost, not only related to the construction or expansion of such facilities, but also in spite of the high maintenance costs. The aging as well as other fluctuations of the population, like migration to and from the city to suburbs or rural areas and the development of new housing can generate problematic situations. Certain areas of the city are underpopulated, while others are overpopulated with regard to educational infrastructure, resulting in, for example, schools having too few or too many students. This phenomenon is particularly evident in larger cities and in adjacent areas where significant expansion of suburbs occurs. New development areas are relatively far from the locations where schools are currently oversized. This serious problem goes far beyond the financial consequences and affects the quality of education and safety, at the same time increasing traffic and hence also the environment. This paper will attempt to diagnose and systematize selected strategies aimed at appropriate designing and location of educational facilities. It will propose the way of diagnosing and balancing negative effects, and it will define how to transfer these analytic findings into a design process to acquire sustainable solutions using a Polish-centred perspective. The subject matter of this research is university campus design, and it is discussed in a wider framework of some of the general concerns of the field of urban design. In this study the concept ‘campus’ is not only taken as model of university settlement, but in a broader sense, any type of space on which higher education institutions are found. The problem is defined in both a universal scale of the general issues and practices developed in the post industrial cities, and the case of Turkish higher education institutions founded in the recent years. The development of university centers is one of the causes of the modern physical alteration of cities and has a major impact on the development process of the city. This research studies the impact of university centers on changing and developing the use of spaces around Tabriz Metropolis. The research tools included observation and direct field studies, reviewing the maps of in 1968, 1996 and 2011 and using the base map in 2006 and changes made in the courses have been reviewed. GIS and SPSS software were used to analyze the maps. The statistical sample of this research is 480 uses around five universities (Tabriz State University, Medical Sciences, Payam Noor, Arts and Islamic Azad University of Tabriz). The research findings show the impact of university centers on changing land use patterns and urban development, especially the development of service and business spaces around these centers. Estimating the socioeconomic and cultural effects of academic centers on the surrounding uses has doubled the importance of changing the approach in the preparation of urban plans, the proper prediction of the effects of shaping factors and favorable landscape for the future of the city and the quantitative and qualitative development.

Josep Maria Sostres (1915-1984) is usually associated with a few works built in Catalonia, most of them on a small or domestic scale. While his production was far more extensive than as depicted in publications, he is associated nevertheless almost exclusively with a few emblematic works, such as the houses Casa Moratiel and Casa Agustí or the headquarters for the newspaper El Noticiero Universal. Some of his other projects, of greater size and complexity, were frustrated after months or even years of work. Many of these were produced at the beginning of his career, such as a Hotel in Montseny (1949-1954), and with which he continued working even when the commission failed, or the preliminary studies for a casino-theatre (1952-1953), which also was never constructed. One of the most unique and least examined of his works comprises several drafts, never published, for the Pedralbes campus of the University of Barcelona, located along Avenida Diagonal, then called Avenida del Generalísimo Franco, in the Les Corts district of the city. Sostres worked on the scheme at the beginning of the 1950s, at a time when this important urban project was still undergoing gestation and architecture competitions for the various faculties and residential colleges were being held. However, Sostres never submitted any entries to these, even though some thirty preparatory drawings for them have been preserved. The unpublished documents found in the historical archives of the Col·legi de Arquitectes de Catalunya reveals Sostres’s intense work on the campus project, the location for which was the subject of heated discussions during the early 1950s. Grup R, a group of Catalan architects formed at that time, as well as the Official Architects’ Association of Catalonia (Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Cataluña, COAC) conveyed several complaints to the authorities at the time, as they considered the choice of location to be unfortunate, in what was then a periphery of Barcelona, as well as located on both sides of the wide avenue, something that would prevent campus unity. Despite the proposed alternative locations, Sostres drew up several general plans for the Pedralbes area, and also a first draft for the Sciences Faculty. The degree of development of his proposals only allows here for an analysis of their volumetric articulation and relationship with the site, especially with Avenida Diagonal, but not the particular aspects of their interior organization. From both the general approaches and the concrete proposal for the Sciences Faculty one can derive an idea of the city for that particular area, an idea that resumed what had been planned for Pedralbes already at the beginning of the century yet never consolidated, as indeed is evident in the present state of the campus. : The quality of Universities is narrowly connected to the quality of its urbana the second one affects the precincts, understood as global complexes (campus) defined with enough level of spatial autonomy; the third scale corresponds to architectural pieces, assumed as independent buildings; and, finally the fourth and smallest scale has to do with the classroom, understood as the minimum learning cell. Once having developed the described system of urbana Utopia has been playing a key role through History as a energy of positive evolution within Higher Education Institutions; an integrated planning for the University physical implantations is a needed activity, valid in any international context, although the specific spatial pattern to be used in each project must be correlated to its specific circumstances, and therefore rooted in the cultural, functional and urban ambit of every precinct.
