Present paper tries to note the effects of technology on communication. How does it affect to the language registers has been analysed. There is one register Marathi letter writing (Mayana) that is endangered and another kind of register engendered in the form of Marathi reality shows on the television.

Multilingual Youth Practices in Computer Mediated Communication

What can people do with multiple languages that they cannot do with one? What kinds of practices does multilingualism enable and how does it shape communication in the digital sphere among young people? This paper focuses on ELF use in computer-mediated-communication, and specifically on language choice and on the exploitation of the users’ plurilingual repertoires as a communicative strategy in Web 2.0 social spaces. Through data drawn from personal blogs and fan fiction texts, it will be exemplified how adapting English to ELF contexts and engaging in language alternation practices such as code-switching and polylingual languaging or heteroglossia may relate to audience design strategies in these online spaces.

C urrent debates on the possible linguistic consequences of the process of globalization concentrate on the complementary issues of Englishization and language loss. Most writers view today's linguistic world as a site of contestation between the global and the local: the spread of English as the lingua franca of the information age is viewed as the linguistic counterpart to the process of economic globalization; the causal factors working against the process of Englishization are thought of as locally bound and are equated with patterns of local resistance to economic (and cultural) globalization. This conception also determines the structure of the discourse on linguistic human rights: the need for negotiated multilingualism and the rights of speakers to resist global pressures and to use, maintain, and develop their local languages. In this essay, I suggest that this conceptual framework misses out on a critical aspect of the linguistic dynamics of our time. The process of globalization undoubtedly has far-reaching linguistic consequences, but these, I claim, have less to do with the spread of Public Culture 16(1): 97-118 A major part of the research for this essay was done in the context of the Agora project, the Institute for Advanced Study, Berlin, 1998. The linguistic landscape (LL) is a sociolinguistic concept that captures power relations and identity marking in the linguistic rendering of urban space: the city read as text. As such, LL is embedded in the physical geography of the cityscape. However, with the increasing scope of multilingual capabilities in digital communications, multilingual options and choices are becoming more prevalent in virtual space.These virtual linguistic voices are important forces in global language ecology. In this paper, the concepts of virtual linguistic landscape and linguistic cyberecology are delineated and exemplified in a variety of Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 applications and environments. It is argued that the LL of virtual space, though grounded in the concept of multilingual interactions within a physically defined world, has distinct characteristics to the digital world that continue to evolve conterminous with the complex relationship of the real to the digital.

- Languages have traditionally been associated with specific ethnic groups confined to defined geographical areas and sometimes to certain discourse contexts or domains of use (e.g. French for diplomacy). The freedom of choosing what language to use in various contexts is restricted by a wide range of nonlinguistic factors. One oftenoverlooked factor is the availability of a digital infrastructure for the languages in question. To put it bluntly: With no keyboard layout available there also will be no texts written. Modern technology and culture have profoundly changed global language perspectives, as reflected in traditional norms of interaction and communication. This paper studied the recent updates and changes that happened due to the widespread of modern technology, focusing on the influence of digital tools, artificial intelligence, social media, and other new media platforms. Quantitative and qualitative data collection methods were used in this research to bring the impact of modern technology on new language development, language diversity, and communication designs. The data for this research was collected from those Indians who migrated to Western countries for higher studies and better job opportunities, as well as from their friends and family members. They regularly connect to friends and family members over digital platforms, which may result in the evolution of their traditional language changes. The findings of this research highlight the dynamic relationship between digital interactions, current language, and digital culture. Today, communication and interaction do not have any barriers because of the evolution of global language into a digital metamorphosis. More than syntax symbols and modern nuances communicate in digital platforms. The change in language leads to cultural changes, and it is an important area to study and evaluate the modern changes in our communication medium. This research also provides valuable information in the field of language and technology and paves the way for further research in this rapidly developing field. Contribution/ Originality: This study highlights the impact of modern technologies, including digital tools, artificial intelligence, social media, and new media, on language development and cultural change, particularly in the context of the Indian diaspora.
