Taxonomy, essential for the classification of biodiversity, is facing challenges due to proposals for governance that may hinder conservation efforts. This paper critiques recent suggestions by Garnett and Christidis to impose restrictions on taxonomic changes, highlighting misunderstandings about the relationship between taxonomy and nomenclature. Instead of reframing the taxonomic discipline, a call is made for conservation legislations to explicitly reference taxonomic concepts to mitigate confusion from taxonomic changes and enhance cooperation between taxonomists and conservation biologists.
