ITTALKS: An application of agents in the Semantic Web

Abstract

Effective use of the vast quantity of information now available on the web will require the use of "Semantic Web" markup languages such as the DARPA Agent Markup Language (DAML). Such languages will enable the automated gathering and processing of much information that is currently available but insufficiently utilized. Effectively, such languages will facilitate the integration of multi-agent systems with the existing information infrastructure. As part of our exploration of Semantic Web technology, and DAML in particular, we have constructed ITTALKS, a web-based system for automatic and intelligent notification of information technology talks. In this paper, we describe the ITTALKS system, and discuss the numerous ways in which the use of Semantic Web concepts and DAML extend its ability to provide an intelligent online service to both the human community and the agents assisting them.

This paper describes SHOE, a set of Simple HTML Ontology Extensions which allow World-Wide Web authors to annotate their pages with semantic knowledge such as "I am a graduate student" or "This person is my graduate advisor". These annotations are expressed in terms of ontological knowledge which can be generated by using or extending standard ontologies available on the Web. This makes it possible to ask Web agent queries such as "Find me all graduate students in Maryland who are working on a project funded by DoD initiative 123-4567", instead of simplistic keyword searches enabled by current search engines. We have also developed a web-crawling agent, Exposé, which interns SHOE knowledge from web documents, making these kinds queries a reality. 1

Such personal assistants will be driven by rules , axioms and the internal model or profile that the agents have inside them for the user. Semantic Web Technology for Agent Communication Protocols

One relevant aspect in the development of the Semantic Web framework is the achievement of a real inter-agents communication capability at the semantic level. The agents should be able to communicate and understand each other using standard communication protocols freely, that is, without needing a laborious a priori preparation, before the communication takes place. For that setting we present in this paper a proposal that promotes to describe standard communication protocols using Semantic Web technology (specifically, OWL-DL and SWRL). Those protocols are constituted by communication acts. In our proposal those communication acts are described as terms that belong to a communication acts ontology, that we have developed, called CommOnt. The intended semantics associated to the communication acts in the ontology is expressed through social commitments that are formalized as fluents in the Event Calculus. In summary, OWL-DL reasoners and rule engines help in our proposal for reasoning about protocols. We define some comparison relationships (dealing with notions of equivalence and specialization) between protocols used by agents from different systems.

Dynamic Semantics of the Web: Useful Tool for the New Generation Agent-Based Software

A complex relationship between the semantic and the dynamic web is derived based on the concepts of ontology engineering. The resultant complex relationship can then be used to construct new generation intelligent agent-based software. Although the World Wide Web (WWW) was originally designed as a distributed information space that supported human navigation through related linked documents, the machine or software agent based assistance has been hindered by the type of markup used within the documents. Our derived relationship can show that how the dynamic semantics of the web enables software agents to derive underlying semantics on the basis of common ontologies and common agreed semantic to generate and process the semantics dynamically. In addition, an ontological relationship between the static and the dynamic semantics of the web is also presented. The Ontological view of this concept highlights the need of dynamic web semantics. Also, we show that how the dynamic semantics will be enabled by and useful to the new generation of the intelligent agent software that will increasingly inhabit the web in the coming years.

Agent Technology Meets the Semantic Web: Interoperability and Communication Issues

This overview paper is a survey of recent research on agent technologies and how this technology can serve the scopes of the Semantic Web project. In a short time, Web has become the dominant database for information retrieval. Due to the exponential growth of the Web and the information it provides, finding accurate information is becoming more and more difficult. In the near future, access to Web will be mediated by intelligent applications and software agents that will assist users in finding accurate information and complete transactions successfully. Concisely, the Semantic Web means ontologies and semantics, software agents means multi-agents systems (MASs) built in FIPA [11] and other agent platforms with their own standards, and Web services means XML. We will try to investigate the way these technologies can cooperate without changing their specifications.

ITtalks: A Case Study in the Semantic Web and DAML+OIL

S emantic Web developers seek to make the Web more machine-readable, to let intelligent agents retrieve and manipulate pertinent information. Achieving this will require seamless agent integration with the Web and taking full advantage of the existing infrastructure (such as message sending, security, authentication, directory services, and application service frameworks). We believe that the Semantic Web markup language DAML+OIL (DARPA Agent Markup Language plus Ontology Inference Layer) will be central to this goal's realization. The DAML Program aims to develop a Semantic Web markup language that provides sufficient rules for ontology development and that supports intelligent agents and other applications. 1,2 (For more information, see the "DAML+OIL" sidebar.)

An Agent Platform for the Semantic Web

This paper presents the FRED system, a development environment for agent-based applications that utilize Semantic Web resources. The FRED system consists of an agent runtime environment based on ontologies as the underlying data model and offers a tool suite for application development. It uses progressive technologies for task-service-resolution that detect suitable problem solving implementations to solve tasks assigned to agents.
