The Stanford Digital Library Metadata Architecture

The overall goal of the Stanford Digital Library project is to provide an infrastructure that affords interoperability among heterogeneous, autonomous digital library services. These services include both search services and remotely usable information processing facilities. In this paper, we survey and categorize the metadata required for a diverse set of Stanford Digital Library services that we have built. We then propose an extensible metadata architecture that meets these requirements. Our metadata architecture fits into our established infrastructure and promotes interoperability among existing and de-facto metadata standards. Several pieces of this architecture are implemented; others are under construction. The architecture includes attribute model proxies, attribute model translation services, metadata information facilities for search services, and local metadata repositories. In presenting and discussing the pieces of the architecture, we show how they address our motivating requirements. Together, these components provide, exchange, and describe metadata for information objects and metadata for information services. We also consider how our architecture relates to prior, relevant work on these two types of metadata.

Case Studies: Metadata Assessment

Organizations assess metadata in their digital collections in a number of different ways. This post is intended to provide a case study to show how three universities evaluate metadata in their digital library systems as an example for other institutions that may be interested in similar assessment activities. Organizations Colgate University System. Colgate currently uses Islandora 7, and is closely watching institutions like Whitman College who are actively migrating to Islandora 8. We migrated our main digital collections from CONTENTdm about 4 years ago and are still migrating our institutional repository from Bepress' Digital Commons. Size. Colgate's digital collections (https://digitalcollections.colgate.edu/ (https://digitalcollections.colgate.edu/)) contain nearly 6000 individual objects, but a count of book and newspaper pages increases the number to 112,781. An additional 500 items in our institutional repository will come online soon. Editors. Students create or capture basic descriptive and administrative metadata for the majority of our Special Collections/University Archives materials. One librarian then adds subject-related metadata, and checks the descriptive metadata for accuracy and conformance to our local standards before upload. Three paraprofessional catalogers have been working on two historical collections as remote work during the pandemic, which is also reviewed by the same librarian before upload. Work on assessing and creating metadata and migrating the Colgate institutional repository has been shared by two librarians and one paraprofessional cataloger 9/24/21, 8:28 AM Case Studies: Metadata Assessment-DLF https://www.diglib.org/case-studies-metadata-assessment/ 3/21 cataloger. Assessment. Most of our larger assessment projects have been tied to migration: either as we migrated out of CONTENTdm or Digital Commons. Now that we are seeing how some of the metadata is working together (or not working, as the case may be), we are doing targeted assessment and resultant amelioration of our prestige and most used collections. University of North Texas System. At the University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries, our digital library system was built in-house and is maintained by our team of programmers, so we can make changes and additions when needed. Size. The Digital Collections (https://digital2.library.unt.edu/search/ (https://digital2.library.unt.edu/search/)) currently house more than 3.1 million items/metadata records, hosted locally within our archival system. All materials are described using the same schema (UNTL), which has 21 possible elds including 8 that are required for every item. Editors. Most metadata creation is handled by students who are employed and trained in UNT Libraries departments, or Libraries staff. Also, many of our materials come from partner institutions that own the physical collections, so staff or volunteers at those locations often have access to edit records in their collections. On a weekly basis, we usually have around 50 people editing records in our system.

How Descriptive Metadata Changes in the UNT Libraries' Collections: A Case Study

This paper reports results of an exploratory quantitative analysis of metadata versioning in a large-scale digital library hosted by University of North Texas. The study begins to bridge the gap in the information science research literature to address metadata change over time. The authors analyzed the entire population of 691,495 unique item-level metadata records in the digital library, with metadata records supplied from multiple institutions and by a number of metadata creators with varying levels of skills. We found that a high proportion of metadata records undergo changes, and that a substantial number of these changes result in increased completeness (the degree to which metadata records include at least one instance of each element required in the Dublin Core-based UNTL metadata scheme). The CIC consortium includes 12 major Midwestern Universities. Their libraries have decided to share the cost of a joint project (2003)(2004)(2006) aimed at better understanding the mechanisms by which emerging technologies and standards can facilitate metadata sharing and the creation of value-added services for their users. The CIC metadata portal project has performed advanced work in the area of Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting, collection level descriptions, metadata transformation and enrichment, practices and usability of metadata standards. It has provided an opportunity for increased collaboration between CIC academic libraries and a way to highlight the wealth of digital resources held by the participating libraries. This article describes the project and enumerates project accomplishments. The project has helped to better the way in which partner institutions share information about digital content and provide access to digital resources. Four content provider of the project highlight different aspects of the project and the practical benefits they found in the collaboration.

A conceptual model for digital libraries evolution

The evolution and preservation of digital libraries are not simply a matter of technological decisions, but they can be better understood if treated as the integration of three complementary dimensions (based on the informational, technological and social domains). These dimensions together form a conceptual framework suitable to characterize the whole digital library concept. In this paper, starting from the experience and the lessons learned in the realization of the EU-India E-Dvara project, we propose such framework, providing motivational examples and discussing opportune solutions. More in particular, we discuss the issues concerned the technical infrastructure adaptation, the coordination of different user roles, and the data evolution in order to select the dimensions along which we base our framework.
