We describe an approach for information retrieval over documents that consist of both free text and semantically enriched markup. In particular, we present the design and implementation prototype of a framework in which both documents and queries can be marked up with statements in the DAML+OIL semantic web language. These statements provide both structured and semi-structured information about the documents and their content. Our approach allows inferencing to be done over this information at several points: when a document is indexed, when a query is processed and when query results are evaluated. Our current prototype is based on a version of the HAIRCUT information retrieval system and uses a semantic web inferencing system implemented using DAML-JessKB.

Computer-based annotation is increasing in popularity as a mechanism for revising documents and sharing comments over the Internet. One reason behind this surge is that viewpoints, summaries, and notes written by others are often helpful to readers. In particular, these types of annotations can help users locate or recall relevant documents. We believe that this model can be applied to the problem of retrieval on the Semantic Web. In this paper, we propose a generalized annotation environment that supports richer forms of description such as natural language. We discuss how RDF can be used to model annotations and the connections between annotations and the documents they describe. Furthermore, we explore the idea of a question answering interface that allows retrieval based both on the text of the annotations and the annotations' associated metadata. Finally, we speculate on how these features could be pervasively integrated into an information management environment, making Semantic Web annotation a first class player in terms of document management and retrieval.

Web is the nature of information search. The Semantic Web vision reveals a radical departure from the traditional theories of Information Retrieval (IR) upon which current search engine technology is built. Semantic Web researchers are very articulate about how the pillars of the Semantic Web-semantically aware, intelligent agents, ontologies, and markup languages-will revolutionize the way that we interact with information on the web. They are less articulate about how we will get there from here. While it's true that the traditional assumptions of IR-small, static, homogeneous, centrally located, monolingual document collections-don't hold for the Web, still it is important to note the success of search engines built on IR theory. This paper calls attention to the gap between traditional IR and the more visionary Semantic Web research. We describe a preliminary roadmap bridging the two areas focusing on the concrete contributions and also calling attention to the weak points of both fields.

Given that semantic Web realization is based on the critical mass of metadata accessibility and the representation of data with formal knowledge, it needs to generate metadata that is specific, easy to understand and well-defined. However, semantic annotation of the web documents is the successful way to make the Semantic Web vision a reality. This paper introduces the Semantic Web and its vision (stack layers) with regard to some concept definitions that helps the understanding of semantic annotation. Additionally, this paper introduces the semantic annotation categories, tools, domains and models.

Due to the explosion of information/knowledge on the web and wide use of search engines for desired information,the role of knowledge management(KM) is becoming more significant in an organization. Knowledge Management in an Organization is used to create ,capture, store, share, retrieve and manage information efficiently. The semantic web, an intelligent and meaningful web, tend to provide a promising platform for knowledge management systems and vice versa, since they have the potential to give each other the real substance for machine-understandable web resources which in turn will lead to an intelligent, meaningful and efficient information retrieval on web. Today,the challenge for web community is to integrate the distributed heterogeneous resources on web with an objective of an intelligent web environment focusing on data semantics and user requirements. Semantic Annotation(SA) is being widely used which is about assigning to the entities in the text and links to their semantic descriptions. Various tools like KIM, Amaya etc may be used for semantic Annotation.

The following report summarizes the highlights of the first workshop on exploiting semantic annotations in information retrieval (ESAIR'08). The workshop format included paper and demo presentations as well as breakout sessions and a panel discussion.

ABSTRACT One vision of the Semantic Web is that it will be much like the Web we know today, except that documents will be enriched by annotations in machine understandable markup. These annotations will provide metadata about the documents as well as machine interpretable statements capturing some of the meaning of document content. We discuss how the information retrieval paradigm might be recast in such an environment. We suggest that retrieval can be tightly bound to inference.
