Abstract

Qualitative and Multi-Method Research | iii Qualitative & Multi-Method Research Finally, our last set of essays remembers the inimitable Kendra Koivu, who passed away in early fall 2019. Kendra was a serious methodologist who had made her mark on the study of qualitative and mixed methods as a junior scholar. Our tribute to her examines the impact she had on her colleagues, her students, her friends, and the discipline as a whole. A bit of a spoiler: Her impact was great. Indeed, Kendra was well on her way to pushing the study of methods forward in her own right. See, for example, her help in coining the term, SUIN, a now common type of condition utilized in Qualitative Comparative Analysis.

Second, in the majority of reported incidents, there were multiple victims and often extreme violence involved, including torture as well as ongoing insecurity and psychological damage. Third, there are significant differences in the way male and female victims are harmed, with the latter sometimes raped and more likely to be burnt and tortured than male victims. The mixed-methods approach to research is a hybrid, a cross between qualitative and quantitative research strategies, adjusted and designed to align with the unique needs of the research. Creswell and Creswell (2018, p. 249), in their seminal work examining research design, regarded the mixed-methods approach, its various forms, and attributes, key in academic research. They emphasized the fact that the mixed-methods approach to research does not only involve adopted qualitative and quantitative methodologies of data collection and analysis but also, and mainly, "involves philosophical assumptions," worldviews, and social values and theories.

Mixed methods research: what it is and what it could be

Combining methods in social scientific research has recently gained momentum through a research strand called Mixed Methods Research (MMR). This approach, which explicitly aims to offer a framework for combining methods, has rapidly spread through the social and behavioural sciences, and this article offers an analysis of the approach from a field theoretical perspective. After a brief outline of the MMR program, we ask how its recent rise can be understood. We then delve deeper into some of the specific elements that constitute the MMR approach, and we engage critically with the assumptions that underlay this particular conception of using multiple methods. Mixed-method Research: A Basic Understanding

Aim and objective: Describe the basics of the mixed-method type of research. Background: Traditionally, the research has been quantitative in nature which provided measures for the parameter of interest. This was followed by the era of qualitative research which helped in a detailed understanding of a phenomenon. This is especially important in healthcare research as it also gives an account of the individual interaction with their environment which is a significant contributor to health. Around the 1970s, the concept of combining both these approaches was used in social sciences. Recently, this mixed-method approach was integrated into health research and educators. However, there has been a continuing debate on the basic nature of this research design. Thus, a complete understanding of this type of research is important. Review results: Various authors described various purposes of the mixed-method approach. The main ones being triangulation, complementarity, development, initiation, and expansion. Theoretical drives, timings, and point of integration are the three factors that need to be considered for the development of studies using this design. Throughout times, different classifications for mixed-method studies have evolved, however, the most accepted one, based on the utility and internal consistency is the classification by Creswell and Clarke. They describe four major designs for mixed-method research as triangulation design, embedded design, explanatory design, and exploratory design. The application, principle, variants, strengths, challenges, and examples of each have been described extensively in this article. Conclusion and clinical significance: Mixed-method approach is a valuable research type as it capitalizes on the strength of both qualitative and quantitative research. It is of significance in health research as it gives a broader range of perspectives to the complex phenomena studied. Thus, proper knowledge of the basics is required to accurately combine and interpret findings of the qualitative and quantitative aspects. This article is a contribution to this basic understanding of mixed-method research.

Qualitative and Multi-Method Research: Organizations, Publication, and Reflections on Integrations

Qualitative and multi-method research in political science has undergone a remarkable transformation. After a long period of relative quiescence, in roughly the past 15 years this branch of methodology has experienced a resurgence, and a considerable body of new research has emerged. Under this methodological umbrella we find diverse tools, including small-N comparative analysis, the comparative case-study method, ethnography, constructivism, and interpretivism. Against the backdrop of a larger movement in political science advocating greater methodological pluralism, new organizations have been established to institutionalize scholarly communication and training. Moreover, mainstream scholarly outlets have come to recognize the importance of this approach, and publications in this tradition have increasingly appeared in leading journals and from leading academic presses. Many qualitative/multi-method scholars seek to maintain strong connections with quantitative methodologists. At the same time, just as occurred with the formation some years ago of the APSA organized section for quantitative methods – with the goal of creating an arena in which scholars in that tradition could closely engage in one another’s work; so qualitative/multi-method scholars see substantial need for separate organizations to help sustain their own approach.

An overview of mixed methods research

Mixed methods research is viewed as the third methodological movement and as an approach it has much to offer health and social science research. Its emergence was in response to the limitations of the sole use of quantitative or qualitative methods and is now considered by many a legitimate alternative to these two traditions. Purists' view of the dichotomy between positivist and non-positivist philosophies is prevalent; however, mixed methods afford researchers an opportunity to overcome this 'false dichotomy'. The philosophical underpinning of pragmatism allows and guides mixed methods researchers to use a variety of approaches to answer research questions that cannot be addressed using a singular method. In particular, healthcare researchers may benefit from the opportunity to use such a dynamic approach to address the complex and multi-faceted research problems often encountered in the health care sector.

Though evaluators often want to understand the combination of complex condi tions that lead to specific outcomes, many traditional statistical tests merely yield information about the significance of discrete variables rather than how spe cifi c confi gurations of variables lead to an outcome. For these complex situations, qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) is a method worth considering. QCA was initially developed in the late 1980s by Charles C. Ragin (now at the University of California-Irvine), who nestled set theory logic and Boolean algebra within a deep knowledge of cases in order to assess which combinations of conditions were necessary or sufficient contributors to outcomes. In this book, author-evaluators Leila C. Kahwati and Heather L. Kane provide a primer on QCA with explanation and examples of its application in mixed methods evaluation, including recent developments in the method since its creation. As one example, Kahwati and Kane (and co-evaluators) used QCA and inter views to evaluate a weight-loss program across 22 veterans outpatient clinics to ascertain program features that were necessary or suffi cient conditions-common QCA research-question language-for weight loss. The evaluators employed QCA to address contextual complexity, using the contextual factors as conditions to assess which ones affected the outcome of weight loss. Even though each site was unique, evaluators found several necessary and suffi cient conditions present across a majority of sites-for example, a standard curriculum, group support, and physician-champions (Kahwati et al., 2011). Social sciences editors are publishing QCA research in increasing numbers, from fewer than 100 articles prior to 2008 to more than 1,000 in 2018 (Mello, 2019), including a handful of QCA articles in the American Journal of Evaluation beginning in 2011. Methodological advances since the 1980s-the ability to use nondichotomous conditions, for example-have improved the applicability of QCA to a variety of scenarios. Kahwati and Kane suggest that evaluators also are using QCA more frequently to address the weaknesses and preserve the strengths of both qualitative and quantitative methods.
