Literature is language in use and is generally seen to play a vital role in language teaching. Literary texts provide us with much aesthetic, intellectual and emotional pleasure in that the writer often seeks to delineate their vision of human experience through a creative, emotive use of language. In essence literature serves to enhance the students' language competence. This paper examines the relationships between language and literature. This is demonstrated with several prose texts with a view to show their pedagogical relevance to students' language needs. In the conclusion, it is emphasized that the link between language and literature which had been ignored in the past should now be exploited for the development of students' performances in the target language.

I have been teaching fiction for a number of years and every time I walk into class to teach my students fiction, a short story or a novel, I get embarrassed to find out that my students who have taken courses such as “The Rise of the Novel, or “Introduction to Literature” still do not know to answer basic questions related to such courses. What is literature? What are the major genres of literature? What is fiction? What are the basic elements of fiction? These questions are fundamentals for literature students. Their inability of not answering them will cause big problems for college instructors presuming that students should have known these questions during the time they were students taking these courses above mentioned. These challenges rise when I first meet with my students taking fiction as university requirement. I ask them individually to answer these questions, to which they are unable to answer in good English. They just use words or phrases to answer, which adds a new ...
The present paper attempts to study the various aspects of the novel as a major form of literature. The novel is only one of many possible prose narrative forms. It shares with other narratives, like the epic and the romance. It shares two basic characteristics: a story and a story-teller. The epic tells a traditional story and is an amalgam of myth, history, and fiction. Its heroes are gods and goddesses and extraordinary men and women. The romance also tells stories of larger-than-life characters. It emphasizes adventure and often involves a quest for an ideal or the pursuit of an enemy. The events seem to project in symbolic form the primal desires, hopes, and terrors of the human mind and are, therefore, analogous to the materials of dream, myth, and ritual. But the novel differs from the epic and romance by its realistic treatment of life and manners. Its heroes are men and women like us, and its chief interest is human character as it manifests itself in society.
