Metaphysics AN INTRODUCTION AND REVIEW.docx

2007, Modern Metaphysics

Abstract

Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that examines the fundamental nature of reality, including the relationship between mind and matter, between substance and attribute, and between possibility and actuality. Reviewing these papers will set the scene for a REVIEW of the very popular KANTISM of Today. Metaphysics is the science of being and ask the question “What really exists?” The answer to this question has been sought for by mankind since the beginning of recorded time. In the past 2500 years there have been many answers to this question and these answers dominate our view of how physics is done. Examples of questions which were originally metaphysical are the shape of the earth, the motion of the earth, the existence of atoms, the relativity of space and time, the uncertainty principle, the renormalization of field theory and the existence of quarks and strings. we should explore our changing conception of what constitutes reality by examining the views of Aristotle, Ptolemy, St. Thomas Aquinas, Copernicus, Galileo, Bacon, Descartes, Newton, Leibnitz, Compte, Einstein, Bohr, Feynman, Schwinger, Yang, Gell-Mann, Wilson and Witten ET AL https://cds.cern.ch/record/311040/files/9609160.pdf IE IS THE INTERNATIONAL DEBT SIMPLY A FIGMENT OF ALL OUR IMAGINATION? IT MAY NEVER BE REPAID IN FULL HENCE IT MAY FOLLOW THAT IN FACT IT DOES NOT EXIST THEREFORE: ""WHY WORRY?"" Metaphysics Peter van Inwagen Meghan Sullivan SEE PDF

What distinguishes general metaphysics from special metaphysics in contemporary discourse?add

The paper differentiates general metaphysics, studying being as such, from special metaphysics, which analyzes specific categories like minds and materials. This distinction highlights significant methodological shifts in metaphysical inquiry since the post-Leibnizian era.

How have views on the categories of being evolved since Aristotle?add

The text indicates that contemporary classifications of being are broader, involving various ontological categories rather than strictly adhering to Aristotle's original categories. Modern metaphysicians, like Quine, further challenge traditional views by questioning the existence of abstract entities.

What role do first causes play in current metaphysical discussions?add

Contemporary metaphysics still engages with the concept of first causes, but often disconnects it from being studies, indicating evolving views on causality and existence. Notably, philosophers like Sartre maintain that even denying first causes remains a relevant metaphysical stance.

Why is the problem of universals significant to modern metaphysics?add

The issue of universals bridges classical and contemporary metaphysical inquiries, influencing positions on realism and nominalism. The ongoing debate reflects divergent perspectives on the existence and nature of properties underlying objects in the real world.

How does contemporary metaphysics address the relation between the mental and physical?add

The paper illustrates that contemporary metaphysics grapples with dualistic and physicalistic frameworks, particularly regarding mental causation. Questions posed include how mental states influence physical events and whether mental properties can exist independently within a purely physical ontology.
